Torque Converter Housing: Assembly

  1. Temporarily install the transfer shaft in the transmission case.

  2. Tilt the transfer shaft and gear assembly over and temporarily install the differential assembly.

  3. Install the differential and transfer shaft bearing cups on the bearings.

  4. Install the special tools, on the differential and transfer shaft bearing cups. Use Special Service Tool: 307-591 Shim Gauge, Differential/Transfer Gear Bearing.

  5. Install the special tools, in the transmission case to align the torque converter housing. Use Special Service Tool: 307-591 Shim Gauge, Differential/Transfer Gear Bearing.

  6. NOTE: Make sure that the silicone has been cleaned off the machined surface of the transmission case and the torque converter housing before installing the Differential/Transfer Gear Bearing Shim Gauge 307-591/3 (4 spacers) or the preload measurement may be inaccurate.

    Install the special tools, on the studs to space the torque converter housing from the transmission case. Use Special Service Tool: 307-591 Shim Gauge, Differential/Transfer Gear Bearing.

  7. Position the torque converter housing on the special tools.

  8. Install the remaining spacers, bolts and washers. Use Special Service Tool: 307-591 Shim Gauge, Differential/Transfer Gear Bearing.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)

  9. Install the nuts and washers on the studs. Use Special Service Tool: 307-591 Shim Gauge, Differential/Transfer Gear Bearing.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)

  10. Rotate the transfer shaft and the differential several times to seat the bearing cups.

  11. Measure and record the smallest and largest preload gap on the Shim Gauge, Differential/Transfer Gear Bearing 307-591/1. Average the 2 measurements to get the thickness of the differential bearing preload shim. For the differential bearing preload shim part number. Refer to: Specifications . Use the General Equipment: Feeler Gauge

  12. Measure and record the smallest and largest preload gap on Shim Gauge, Differential/Transfer Gear Bearing 307-591/2. Average the 2 measurements to get the thickness of the transfer shaft bearing preload shim. For the transfer gear bearing preload shim part number. Refer to: Specifications . Use the General Equipment: Feeler Gauge

  13. Position the transfer shaft tube fluid dam on the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle., 307-583 Oil dam seal installer.

  14. NOTE: Support the torque converter housing using blocks of wood, or damage to the torque converter housing may occur.

    Using the special tools, install the transfer shaft tube fluid dam. Use Special Service Tool: 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle., 307-583 Oil dam seal installer.

  15. Inspect the transfer shaft fluid dam to be sure it is seated evenly into the torque converter housing.

  16. Install the transfer shaft roller bearing shim.

  17. Using the special tool, install the differential bearing cup. Use Special Service Tool: 307-576 Bearing Cup Installer. Use the General Equipment: Hydraulic Press

  18. Install the differential roller bearing shim.

  19. Position the differential bearing cup on the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 307-576 Bearing Cup Installer.

  20. Using the special tools, install the differential bearing cup. Use Special Service Tool: 204-029 Drawbar., 307-541 Installer, Transfer Gear Bearing., 307-576 Bearing Cup Installer.
