Oil Cooler: Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Remove the retainers and the engine undershield.

  3. NOTE: Lubricate the engine oil filter gasket with clean engine oil prior to installing the oil filter.

    Remove and discard the engine oil filter.

    Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

    Use the General Equipment: Strap Wrench

    Material: Motorcraft ® SAE 5W-20 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil / XO-5W20-QSP (WSS-M2C945-A)

    Torque: 128 lb.in (14.5 Nm)

    • Using hose locking pliers, clamp the oil cooler coolant hoses.

      Use the General Equipment: Locking Pliers

    • Disconnect the coolant hoses.

  4. NOTE: If metal or aluminum material is present in the oil cooler, mechanical concerns exist. Failure to correct these concerns may cause engine failure.

    • Remove the retainer and the engine oil cooler.

      Torque: 41 lb.ft (55 Nm)

    • To diagnose mechanical concerns. Refer to: Engine .

  5. Inspect the oil cooler seal.
