Cylinder Head: Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Remove the following items:

    1. Remove the turbocharger. Refer to: Turbocharger .
    2. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to: Intake Manifold .

  4. Lower the engine and remove the jack.

  5. Remove the camshafts. Refer to: Camshafts .
  6. Position the cover and disconnect the CHT sensor wiring harness electrical connector.

    • Disconnect the coolant bypass hose.

      Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

    • Disconnect the ECT sensor wiring harness electrical connector.

    • Detach the wiring harness retainers.

  7. Disconnect the coolant hoses.

  8. Remove the bolt and the crankcase vent oil separator tube.

  9. NOTE: If the camshafts and valve tappets are to be re-used, mark the location of the valve tappets to make sure they are assembled in their original positions.
    NOTE: The number on the valve tappets only reflects the digits that follow the decimal. For example, a tappet with the number 0.650 has the thickness of 0.1437in (3.65mm).

    Remove the valve tappets.

  10. NOTE: Install new components as necessary.

    Inspect the valve tappets.

  11. NOTE: Make sure that the cylinder head is at ambient air temperature before removing the cylinder head bolts.

    • Remove the bolts and the cylinder head.

    • Discard the bolts.

  12. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.

  13. NOTE: Support the cylinder head on a bench with the head gasket side up.

    Inspect the cylinder head and cylinder block distortion. Refer to: Cylinder Head Distortion . Refer to: Cylinder Block Distortion .
