Cylinder Head: Removal

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
- Remove the following items:
- Remove the turbocharger. Refer to: Turbocharger .
- Remove the intake manifold. Refer to: Intake Manifold .
- Lower the engine and remove the jack.

Use the General Equipment: Wooden Block
- Remove the camshafts. Refer to: Camshafts .
- Position the cover and disconnect the CHT sensor wiring harness electrical connector.

- Disconnect the coolant bypass hose.
Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Disconnect the ECT sensor wiring harness electrical connector.
- Detach the wiring harness retainers.
- Disconnect the coolant bypass hose.
- Disconnect the coolant hoses.
Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Remove the bolt and the crankcase vent oil separator tube.

NOTE: If the camshafts and valve tappets are to be re-used, mark the location of the valve tappets to make sure they are assembled in their original positions.NOTE: The number on the valve tappets only reflects the digits that follow the decimal. For example, a tappet with the number 0.650 has the thickness of 0.1437in (3.65mm).
Remove the valve tappets.

NOTE: Install new components as necessary.
Inspect the valve tappets.

NOTE: Make sure that the cylinder head is at ambient air temperature before removing the cylinder head bolts.
- Remove the bolts and the cylinder head.
- Discard the bolts.
- Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.

NOTE: Support the cylinder head on a bench with the head gasket side up.
Inspect the cylinder head and cylinder block distortion. Refer to: Cylinder Head Distortion . Refer to: Cylinder Block Distortion .
