Cylinder Head: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. NOTE: Do not Use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.
    NOTE: If there is no residual gasket material present, metal surface prep can be used to clean and prepare the surfaces.

    Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

  2. Install the cylinder head gasket.

  3. NOTE: Make sure that new bolts are installed.
    NOTE: Make sure that no fluids are present in the cylinder head bolt threaded bores.

    Install the cylinder head and the new bolts and tighten in sequence shown below.

    Torque:

    Stage 1: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

    Stage 2: 133 lb.in (15 Nm)

    Stage 3: 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)

    Stage 4: 90 °

    Stage 5: 90 °

  4. Lubricate the valve tappets with clean engine oil and install in their original positions.

    Material: Motorcraft ® SAE 5W-20 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil / XO-5W20-QSP (WSS-M2C945-A)

  5. Install the crankcase vent oil separator tube and the bolt.

    Torque: 35 lb.in (4 Nm)

  6. Connect the coolant hoses.

    Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

    • Attach the wiring harness retainers.

    • Connect the ECT sensor wiring harness electrical connector.

    • Connect the coolant bypass hose.

  7. Connect the CHT sensor wiring harness electrical connector and install the cover.

  8. Install the camshafts. Refer to: Camshafts .
  9. Install the jack and raise the engine.

  10. Install the following items:

    1. Install the intake manifold. Refer to: Intake Manifold .
    2. Install the turbocharger. Refer to: Turbocharger .

  11. Remove and discard the engine oil filter. Use the General Equipment: Strap Wrench

    Torque: 128 lb.in (14.5 Nm)

  12. Remove the drain plug, drain engine oil and install drain plug.

    Torque: 21 lb.ft (28 Nm)

  13. NOTE: Lubricate the new engine oil filter with clean engine oil.

    Lubricate and install the engine oil filter.

    Material: Motorcraft ® SAE 5W-20 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil / XO-5W20-QSP (WSS-M2C945-A)

    Torque: 128 lb.in (14.5 Nm)

  14. Fill the engine with clean engine oil.

    Material: Motorcraft ® SAE 5W-20 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil / XO-5W20-QSP (WSS-M2C945-A)
