Starter Motor: Removal

- Refer to: Health and Safety Precautions .
- Disconnect the battery. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- Remove the underbody shield retainers and then remove the underbody shield.

- Remove the battery positive cable retaining nut and then disconnect the battery positive cable at the starter motor.
Torque: 106 lb. in (12 Nm)
- Remove the starter motor control wire retaining nut and then disconnect the starter motor control wire at the starter motor.
Torque: 53 lb. in (6 Nm)
- Remove the battery positive cable retaining nut and then disconnect the battery positive cable at the starter motor.
- Remove the ground cable retaining nut and then disconnect the ground cable.
Torque: 159 lb.in (18 Nm)
- Remove the starter motor retaining studbolts and then remove the starter motor.
Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)
- Inspect the starter motor drive gear and the flexplate or flywheel ring gear. Refer to: Starter Motor Drive Gear and Flywheel Ring Gear Inspection .
