Instrument Panel: Removal

WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure in this article, refer to Safety Warnings in GENERAL INFORMATION (EXCEPT ELECTRIC) . Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

Evacuate and recover the A/C refrigerant. Refer to: Air Conditioning (A/C) System Recovery, Evacuation and Charging - Vehicles With: R134A Refrigerant .

Remove the cowl panel grille. Refer to: Cowl Panel Grille .

Remove the screws and the cowl panel.

NOTE: If equipped.

Disconnect the hose.

Remove the bolts.

Torque

: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

NOTE: Make sure all openings are sealed.

Remove the evaporator pipe nut and position the flange and pipe aside.

NOTE: If equipped.

Disconnect the electrical connector.

Torque

: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

Clamp and disconnect the heater hoses. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp(s)

Remove both front doors. Refer to: Front Door .

Remove the floor console. Refer to: Floor Console - Vehicles Without: Center Armrest . Refer to: Floor Console - Vehicles With: Center Armrest .

WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Ignition must remain OFF until repair is complete. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

Turn the ignition off, wait at least one minute.

Remove the automatic transmission selector lever or the manual transmission gearshift lever. Refer to: Selector Lever Assembly 6-Speed Automatic Transmission - 6F15 . Refer to: Selector Lever Assembly 6-Speed PowerShift Transmission - DPS6/6DCT250 . Refer to: Gearshift Lever - 5-Speed Manual Transmission - B5/IB5/5-Speed Manual Transmission - MTX75 . Refer to: Gearshift Lever - 6-Speed Manual Transmission - B6/6-Speed Manual Transmission - MMT6 .

Manual transmission only

Remove the manual transmission gear shift lever bracket.

Torque

: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

Remove the bolts and position the parking brake control aside.

Torque

: 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)

On both sides, Remove the A-pillar trim panel. Refer to: A-Pillar Trim Panel .

Disconnect the electrical connector at the RH A-pillar.

Position the front door weatherstrip aside, release the clips and remove the RH instrument panel finish panel.

Remove the retainers and the RH insulation panel.

Position the weatherstrip aside.

Release the clips and remove the LH front door scuff plate panel.

Remove the hood latch release handle access cover, release the clips and remove the hood latch release handle.

Release the clips and remove the lower LH cowl trim panel.

Position the LH front carpet aside.

Detach the retainer, remove the bolts and position the wiring harness aside.

Position the weatherstrip aside.

Release the clips and remove the RH front door scuff plate panel.

Release the clips and remove the lower RH cowl trim panel.

Position aside the RH front carpet.

Detach the retainer, remove the bolt and position the wiring harness aside.

NOTE: Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the steering column shaft is disconnected, or damage to the clockspring may result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, remove and recenter the clockspring. REFER to the CLOCKSPRING .

Remove and discard the steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt and disconnect the steering column shaft from the steering gear.

Torque

: 21 lb.ft (28 Nm)

NOTE: Remove the bolts from one side completely and support the instrument panel before removing the bolts from the opposite side.

Remove the instrument panel support bolts.

Torque

: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

NOTE: Make sure that all electrical connectors and wiring are not hindered before removing the instrument panel or damage to the components may occur.

Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.

Rotate the instrument panel face down and remove through the LH front door opening.
