Instrument Panel Upper Section: Removal

All vehicles 

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure in this article, refer to Safety Warnings in GENERAL INFORMATION (EXCEPT ELECTRIC) . Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

    Refer to: Health and Safety Precautions .

  2. Remove both A-pillar trim panels. Refer to: A-Pillar Trim Panel .
  3. Remove the retainers and the RH insulation panel.

  4. Both sides. Position the front door weatherstrip aside, release the clips and remove the RH instrument panel finish panel.

    1. Remove the glove compartment screws.

      Torque

      : 18 lb.in (2 Nm)

    2. NOTE: If equipped.

      Disconnect the electrical connectors.

  5. Disconnect the battery. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  6. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the bolts.

    Torque

    : 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

  7. Remove the bolt.

  10. Remove the selector lever. Refer to: Selector Lever Assembly 6-Speed Automatic Transmission - 6F15 . Refer to: Selector Lever Assembly 6-Speed PowerShift Transmission - DPS6/6DCT250 . Refer to: Gearshift Lever - 6-Speed Manual Transmission - B6/6-Speed Manual Transmission - MMT6 . Refer to: GEARSHIFT LEVER - 5-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION - B5 IB5 5-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION - MTX75 .

    Vehicles with manual transmission 

  11. Remove the bolts and the manual transmission gear shift lever bracket.

    Torque

    : 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

    All vehicles 

  12. Depending on vehicle option content, remove the FCDIM or the FDIM. Refer to: Front Display Interface Module (FDIM) . Refer to: Front Control/Display Interface Module (FCDIM) .
  13. If equipped with a FDIM. Refer to: Audio Front Control Module (ACM) Vehicles With: AM/FM/CD/SYNC . Refer to: Audio Front Control Module (ACM) Vehicles With: Sony Audio System .
  14. Remove the screws and the support bracket.

    Torque

    : 27 lb.in (3 Nm)

  15. Disconnect the electrical connectors, detach the wiring harness retainers and position the wiring harness aside.

  16. Vehicles equipped with the premium audio system remove the APIM. Refer to: SYNC Module [APIM] .
  17. Disconnect the electrical connector and detach the wiring harness retainer at the front PATS antenna.

  18. Remove the driver knee air bag. Refer to: Driver Knee Airbag .
  19. Remove the retainer and the steering column opening trim panel.

    • Disconnect and position aside the air sensor.

  20. Position the steering column to the full forward and down position.

  21. NOTE: If equipped.

    Remove the retainer.

  22. NOTE: Turn the steering wheel 90° to access the slots.

    1. Release the RH retaining tab.
    2. Release the LH retaining tab.

  23. Release the retaining tabs and remove the upper steering column shroud.

  25. Vehicles without intelligent access. Disconnect the electrical connector and detach the wiring harness retainers.

  27. Disconnect the electrical connector at the back of the steering column.

  28. Remove and discard the steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt and disconnect the steering column shaft from the steering gear.

    Torque

    : 21 lb.ft (28 Nm)

  29. Remove and discard the 4 steering column bolts and remove the steering column.

    Torque

    : 21 lb.ft (28 Nm)

    1. Remove the screws.

      Torque

      : 9 lb.in (1 Nm)

    2. Release the clip.
    3. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the IPC.

  30. If equipped with intelligent access Disconnect the electrical connector.

  31. Disconnect the headlamp switch electrical connector.

  36. NOTE: To avoid damaging the upper section, the aid of an assistant is required to carry out this step.
    NOTE: Make sure that all electrical connectors, wiring and vent tubes are not hindered before removing the upper section or damage to the components may occur.
    NOTE: Install all the bolts finger tight before final tightening.

    With the help of an assistant. Disconnect the electrical connector and detach the pin type harness retainer, release the clips and remove the bolts and slide the instrument panel upper section rearward.

    Torque

    : 27 lb.in (3 Nm)

  37. NOTE: This step is only required if the ambient light sensor harness is not equipped with an in-line connector.

    With the help of an assistant. Pull the instrument panel upper section rearward and disconnect the ambient light sensor electrical connector, position ambient light sensor harness aside and remove the instrument panel upper section.
