  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Remove the engine appearance cover.

  3. Remove the battery tray. Refer to: Battery Tray .
  4. Remove the wiring retainers and the nuts and remove the battery tray support bracket.

  5. Disconnect the gearshift cables.

  6. Disconnect the electrical connector, wiring retainer and remove the bolt and the ground strap.

  7. Remove the bellhousing bolts.

  8. Remove the nuts and position aside the wiring bracket.

  9. Remove the bolts and position aside the starter.

    1. Remove the catalytic converter support bracket-to-catalytic converter nuts.
    2. Remove the catalytic converter support bracket-to-transmission nuts.

    1. Remove the catalytic converter insulator.
    2. Remove the catalytic converter support bracket.
    3. Remove the inspection cover.

  11. Remove the nuts and bracket.

    1. Remove the subframe to roll restrictor bolt.
    2. Remove the roll restrictor-to-roll restrictor bracket bolt. Loosen: 2 turn(s)

  12. Remove the front roll restrictor bracket-to-transmission bolt.

  13. Remove the LH fender splash shield. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .
  14. Remove the LH halfshaft. Refer to: Front Halfshaft LH .
  15. Remove the front wheels. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .
  16. NOTE: Do not use a prying device or separator fork between the ball joint and the wheel knuckle. Damage to the ball joint or ball joint seal may result. Only use the pry bar by inserting it into the lower arm body opening.
    NOTE: Use care when releasing the lower arm and wheel knuckle into the resting position or damage to the ball joint seal may occur.

    Remove and discard the lower control arm bolt and nut and separate the lower control arm from the steering knuckle.

  17. WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping fluid.

    1. Remove and discard the 2 bearing strap nuts.
    2. Remove and discard the bearing strap.
    3. Slide the intermediate shaft out far enough to clear the seal.

    1. Install the seal protector. 97ZT-7M181-A Seal Protector.
    2. Remove the intermediate shaft from the transmission.

  18. NOTE: The inner constant velocity (CV) joint must not be bent more than 18°.
    NOTE: The outer constant velocity (CV) joint must not be bent more than 45°.

    Position aside intermediate shaft aside.

  21. NOTE: Use caution when lowering the vehicle after the special tool is installed. If the vehicle is lowered onto the special tool, damage to the special tool or the vehicle can occur.

    Install the special tool and support the engine. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1554 Engine Support Bar.

  22. Remove the bolt and the transmission support insulator.

  24. NOTE: Make sure that all openings are sealed.

    Disconnect the clutch hydraulic tube.

  26. Install the following items:

    • Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack
    • Use the General Equipment: Wooden Block
    • Use the General Equipment: Retaining Strap

  27. Using the special tool, lower the engine and transmission. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1554 Engine Support Bar.
