  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Remove the air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .
  3. Remove the battery tray. Refer to: Battery Tray .
  4. Disconnect the wiring retainers, remove the nuts and remove the battery tray support bracket.

  5. Disconnect the shift cables from the transmission and the shift cable bracket, disconnect the slave cylinder hydraulic tube from the bracket and disconnect the reverse light switch.

  6. Remove the bolts and the shift cable bracket.

  7. Disconnect the neutral position sensor.

  8. Disconnect the slave cylinder hydraulic tube from the slave cylinder.

  9. Disconnect the wiring harness retainer from the back of the transmission.

  10. Remove the 2 top bellhousing bolts and the top starter motor bolt.

  11. Remove the underbody shield.

  12. If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.

    Torque

    : 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)

  13. Remove the bolts and remove the roll restrictor and bracket.

  14. Remove both front wheels and tires. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .
  15. Remove the LH halfshaft. Refer to: FRONT HALFSHAFT LH
  16. If equipped, remove the RH ride height sensor.

  17. NOTE: Do not use a prying device to open the slot in the knuckle to separate the lower ball joint from the knuckle assembly. Damage to the knuckle assembly may occur.
    NOTE: Do not use a prying device or separator fork between the ball joint and the wheel knuckle. Damage to the ball joint or ball joint seal may result. Only use the pry bar by inserting it into the lower arm body opening.
    NOTE: Use care when releasing the lower arm and wheel knuckle into the resting position or damage to the ball joint seal may occur.

    Remove and discard the lower ball joint nut and bolt. Disconnect the lower arm and position aside the ball joint seal.

  18. Remove the flexible brake hose bolt.

  19. NOTE: Do not bend the inner joint more than 18° and the outer joint more than 45°. Damage to the shaft will occur.

    Remove and discard the halfshaft retaining strap and the halfshaft retaining strap nuts. Support the RH halfshaft from the transmission.

  20. Remove the bolt and position the starter aside.

  21. NOTE: Do not forcibly bend or twist the exhaust flexible pipe. Failure to follow these instructions may cause damage to the flexible pipe.

    Support the exhaust flexible pipe with a support wrap or suitable splint.

  22. Remove the nuts and separate the exhaust pipe from the down-pipe. Remove the gasket.

  23. Remove the bolts and the exhaust insulator.

  24. Remove the nuts and position aside the exhaust support bracket.

  26. Install the special tool and support the engine and transmission. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1554 Engine Support Bar.

  27. Remove the transmission support insulator.

  29. Install the following items:

    • Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack
    • Use the General Equipment: Wooden Block
    • Use the General Equipment: Retaining Strap

  30. Remove the bellhousing bolt.
