Section 3 (Engine - 2.3L ECOBOOST (257KW/350PS) - Mi4): Removal: Engine

300-OTC1585AE Powertrain Lift
Floor Crane
Adjustable Mounting Arm
Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
Center Punch
Wooden Block
3.5 mm Drill Bit
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Evacuate the A/C system. Refer to: Air Conditioning (A/C) System Recovery, Evacuation and Charging - Vehicles With: R134A Refrigerant .
  4. Remove the following items:

    1. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to: Catalytic Converter .
    2. Remove the cooling fan motor and shroud. Refer to: Cooling Fan Motor and Shroud .
    3. Remove the A/C compressor belt. Refer to: Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor Belt .

  5. Release the tabs and lift the junction box cover.

    • Disconnect the main wiring harness from the fuse box and detach the retainers.

    • Remove the nut and the power feed cable.

  6. If equipped, disconnect the block heater electrical connector.

    1. Remove the bolt and the ground wire.
    2. Remove the bolt and the ground cable.
    3. Detach the wiring and hose retainers.

    1. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve quick release coupling. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    2. Disconnect the fuel pressure sensor electrical connector.
    3. Detach the wiring and coolant hose retainers.
    4. Release the clamps and position the coolant hoses aside. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    5. Release the clips and position the heater hoses aside.

    • Detach the hoses and retainer.

    • Disconnect the coolant hoses and remove the degas bottle. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  7. Remove the LH fender splash shield. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .

    Vehicles without PCM security shield 

  8. Remove the screws and the PCM cover.

    Vehicles with PCM security shield 

  9. Using a center punch and drill and bit, remove the screws and the PCM security shield. Use the General Equipment: Center Punch. Use the General Equipment: 3.5 mm Drill Bit

    All vehicles 

  10. Disconnect the PCM electrical connectors and retainer.

  11. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector.

  12. NOTE: Be prepared to collect escaping fluid.

    Remove the drain plug, drain engine oil and install drain plug.

    Torque

    : 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)

  13. Remove and discard the engine oil filter.

  14. NOTE: Make sure that all openings are sealed.

    Release the clamp and remove the CAC pipe.

  15. NOTE: Make sure that all openings are sealed.
    NOTE: Discard the O-ring seals and gasket seals.

    1. Remove the nuts and position the A/C lines aside.
    2. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector and remove the bolts and the A/C compressor.

  16. Disconnect the MAPT sensor electrical connector.

  17. Remove the following items:

    1. Remove the LH halfshaft. Refer to: Front Halfshaft LH .
    2. Remove the power transfer unit. Refer to: Power Transfer Unit .

  18. NOTE: Gearshift cables must not be kinked or bent.

    Disconnect the shift cables from the transmission and position aside.

  19. NOTE: Make sure that all openings are sealed.

    Disconnect the slave cylinder hydraulic tube from the slave cylinder and bracket.

    WARNING: Fuel may remain pressurized in some fuel lines after the Fuel System Pressure Release procedure. Wear safety gloves and a face shield when disconnecting pressure lines to avoid skin and eye contact. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

    Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump fuel feed tube quick release coupling and retainer.

  21. Install Special Service Tool: 300-OTC1585AE Powertrain Lift. Use the General Equipment: Adjustable Mounting Arm. Use the General Equipment: Wooden Block

    • Detach the wiring harness electrical connector.

    • Remove the nuts and the battery tray support bracket.

  22. Remove the transmission mount bolt and the bracket.

    1. Remove the engine mount nuts.
    2. Remove the bolts and the engine mount.

  23. NOTE: Make sure that no components catch.
    NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.

    Using the powertrain table, adjustable mounting arm and remove the engine and transmission assembly. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview . Use Special Service Tool: 300-OTC1585AE Powertrain Lift. Use the General Equipment: Adjustable Mounting Arm. Use the General Equipment: Wooden Block

    • Detach the wiring harness retainers.

    • Remove the nuts and the bracket.

    1. Remove the starter motor stud bolts and then position the starter motor to disconnect starter motor the wiring.
    2. Remove the starter motor control wire nut.
    3. Remove the starter motor battery positive cable retaining nut and disconnect the battery positive cable housing from the starter motor.

  24. Remove the stater motor isolator.

  26. Remove the special tools and the engine from the powertrain table. Remove Special Service Tool: 300-OTC1585AE Powertrain Lift. Use the General Equipment: Adjustable Mounting Arm. Use the General Equipment: Wooden Block

  27. Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connectors and retainers.

  28. NOTE: The upper transmission bolt will be able to be removed until the turbocharger is removed.

    • Detach the coolant hose retainers.

    • Loosen the bolts and remove the two bottom bolts.

    Remove the upper transmission bolts and the transmission.
