Cylinder Head: Installation

NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.NOTE: Observe all warnings or cautions and follow all application directions contained on the packaging of the metal surface prep.NOTE: Clean the cylinder head bolt holes in the cylinder block. Make sure all coolant, oil or other foreign material is removed.
Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.
Material
: Motorcraft® Metal Surface Prep Wipes / ZC-31-B
- Check the cylinder head distortion. Refer to: CYLINDER HEAD DISTORTION .
- Install the new cylinder head gasket.

NOTE: The cylinder head bolts are torque-to-yield and must not be reused. New cylinder head bolts must be installed.
Install the cylinder head and the new bolts, tighten in sequence shown in 5 stages.
Torque
:Stage 1: 62 lb.in (7 Nm) Stage 2: 133 lb.in (15 Nm) Stage 3: 41 lb.ft (55 Nm) Stage 4: 90° Stage 5: 90°
- Connect the CHT sensor electrical connector and slide the insulator down.

- Connect the coolant hoses.
- Connect the ECT sensor electrical connector.
- Connect the coolant tube.
- Position the ground wiring harness and install the bolts.
Torque
: 177 lb.in (20 Nm)
- Install the following items:
- Refer to: Valve Tappets .
- Refer to: FUEL INJECTOR
- Remove the drain plug, drain engine oil and install drain plug.
Torque
: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)
- Lubricate the O-ring seal and install the new engine oil filter, tighten in 2 stages.

: Motorcraft® SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil / XO-5W30-QSP (WSS-M2C946-A)
Torque
:Stage 1: 71 lb.in (8 Nm) Stage 2: 180°
- Install the turbocharger. Refer to: TURBOCHARGER
- Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
