Crankshaft Front Seal: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: Do not loosen or remove the crankshaft pulley bolt without first installing the special tools. The crankshaft pulley and the crankshaft timing sprocket are not keyed to the crankshaft. Before any repair requiring loosening or removal of the crankshaft pulley bolt, the crankshaft and camshafts must be locked in place by the special service tools, otherwise severe engine damage can occur.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Remove the engine appearance cover.

  3. NOTE: Whenever the turbocharger air intake system components are removed, always cover the open ports to protect them from debris. It is important that no foreign material enter the system. The turbocharger compressor vanes are susceptible to damage from even small particles. All of the components should be inspected and cleaned, if needed, prior to installation or reassembly.

    1. Disconnect the vacuum tube from air cleaner outlet pipe. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    2. Disconnect quick release couplings. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    3. Disconnect the PCV quick release coupling.
    4. Disconnect the MAP sensor electrical connector.
    5. Loosen the air cleaner outlet pipe clamps, remove the nuts and the air outlet pipe.
    6. Clean, inspect, and cover all open ports.

    Loosen the clamps, remove the bolt and the CAC outlet pipe.

    • Clean, inspect, and cover all open ports.

  5. Remove the following items:

    1. Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt .
    2. Refer to: Starter Motor .

    • Disconnect the throttle actuator and VCT solenoid electrical connectors.

    • Remove and discard the VCT solenoid bolts.

    • Remove the VCT solenoids.

  7. NOTE: Only rotate the crankshaft clockwise.

    1. Rotate the crankshaft until piston No. 1 is approximately 35° BTDC.
    2. Verify the VCT units are in the position shown.

    • If the VCT units are not in the position shown, rotate the crankshaft clockwise one complete revolution.

    • Remove and discard the RH halfshaft bearing retaining strap and the nuts.

    • Remove the bolts and the RH halfshaft support bracket.

  9. Remove the engine plug bolt.

  10. Install Special Service Tool: 303-1604 Timing Peg, Crankshaft TDC.

  11. NOTE: Only rotate the crankshaft clockwise.

    Rotate the crankshaft slowly until the crankshaft stops.

  12. Install Special Service Tool: 303-1606 Locking Tool, Variable Camshaft Timing.

    Torque

    : 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    1. Turn until resistance is felt.
    2. Torque

      : 133 lb.in (15 Nm)

  14. Remove the bolts and the heat shield.

  15. Remove the plug bolt from the oil pan.

  16. NOTE: The drill bit must be installed to maintain the balance shaft timing. Do not remove the drill bit until you are instructed to do so.
    NOTE: Exhaust and A/C compressor removed from graphic for clarity.

    Install a 6 mm drill bit into the oil pan hole, through the oil pump housing and into the balance shaft.

  17. Install Special Service Tool: 303-1602 Locking Tool, Crankshaft.

  18. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the retainer and the oil pump control solenoid.

    1. M8x30
    2. M8x25Install Special Service Tool: 303-1611-02 Adapter for 303-1611, Torque Multiplier.

      Torque

      : 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)

  20. Install Special Service Tool: 303-1611-01 Adapter for 303-1611.

    Torque

    : 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)

  21. Only tighten the nut finger tight at this stage. Install Special Service Tool: 303-1611 Torque Multiplier.

  22. Loosen:: 5 turn(s)

    • Remove and discard the crankshaft bolt.

    • Remove the crankshaft pulley.

    • NOTE: The production engine is not equipped with a friction washer. Whenever the crankshaft pulley is removed, a friction washer (base part number 6378) must be installed.

      If equipped, remove and discard the friction washer.

  25. Remove and discard the crankshaft front seal. Use Special Service Tool: 303-293 Remover, Crankshaft Seal.
