Crankshaft Front Seal: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. NOTE: Make sure that a new component is installed.

    Using the special tool, install the crankshaft front seal. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1603 Installer, Front Cover Seal.

  2. Remove Special Service Tool: 303-1602 Locking Tool, Crankshaft.

  3. NOTE: Only rotate the crankshaft clockwise.

    Rotate the crankshaft slowly until the crankshaft stops.

    1. NOTE: The production engine is not equipped with a friction washer. Whenever the crankshaft pulley is removed, a friction washer (base part number 6378) must be installed.

      Install a new friction washer.

    2. Install the crankshaft pulley.
    3. Install a new crankshaft pulley bolt finger tight.

    1. Install 3/16 inch punch. Use the General Equipment: Punch
    2. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt.

      Torque

      :Stage 1: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm) Stage 2: 52 lb.ft (70 Nm)

  4. Remove 3/16 inch punch. Use the General Equipment: Punch

    1. Install Special Service Tool: 303-1611 Torque Multiplier.
    2. Only tighten the nut finger tight at this stage.

    1. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt.

      Torque

      : 44 lb.ft (60 Nm)

    2. Torque

      :Stage 1: 90° Stage 2: 90° Stage 3: 90° Stage 4: 90° Stage 5: 90°

  5. Remove Special Service Tool: 303-1611 Torque Multiplier.

    • Install 3/16 inch punch. Use the General Equipment: Punch

  6. Remove Special Service Tool: 303-1604 Timing Peg, Crankshaft TDC.

  7. NOTE: Exhaust and A/C compressor removed from graphic for clarity.

    Remove the 6 mm drill bit. Use the General Equipment: 6 mm Drill Bit

  8. Remove Special Service Tool: 303-1606 Locking Tool, Variable Camshaft Timing.

  9. NOTE: Only rotate the crankshaft clockwise.

    Rotate the crankshaft 1 and 3/4 revolutions and continue until piston No. 1 is approximately 45° BTDC.

  11. NOTE: Only rotate the crankshaft clockwise.

    Rotate the crankshaft slowly until the crankshaft stops.

  12. NOTE: The punch can only be installed if the timing is correct.

    • Install 3/16 inch punch. Use the General Equipment: Punch

  13. Install the plug bolt into the oil pan.

    Torque

    : 177 lb.in (20 Nm)

  14. Install the heat shield and the bolts.

    Torque

    : 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

  15. Remove Special Service Tool: 303-1604 Timing Peg, Crankshaft TDC.

  16. Install the engine plug bolt.

    Torque

    : 177 lb.in (20 Nm)

  17. Remove Special Service Tool: 303-1611-01 Adapter for 303-1611.

  18. Remove Special Service Tool: 303-1611-02 Adapter for 303-1611, Torque Multiplier.

  19. Install the oil pump control solenoid, retainer and connect the electrical connector.

    Torque

    : 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  20. Install the RH halfshaft support bracket and the bolts.

    Torque

    : 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)

  21. NOTE: Make sure that new components are installed.

    Position the halfshaft, and install the retaining strap and the nuts.

    Torque

    : 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  22. Install the following items:

    1. Refer to: Starter Motor .
    2. Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt .

    • Lubricate the seal with clean engine oil, install the VCT solenoids and the retainers.

      Material

      : Motorcraft® SAE 5W-20 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil / XO-5W20-QSP (WSS-M2C945-A)

      Torque

      : 62 lb.in (7 Nm)

    • Connect the throttle actuator and VCT solenoids electrical connectors.

    1. Install the CAC outlet pipe and install the bolt.

      Torque

      : 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

    2. Tighten the clamps.

      Torque

      : 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

    1. Install the air cleaner outlet pipe assembly and the nuts.

      Torque

      : 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

    2. Tighten the air cleaner outlet pipe clamps.

      Torque

      : 35 lb.in (4 Nm)

    3. Connect the MAP sensor electrical connector.
    4. Connect the PCV coupling.
    5. Connect the quick release couplings. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    6. Connect the vacuum tube to air outlet pipe. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  23. Install the engine appearance cover.

  24. Use the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Misfire Monitor Profile Correction routine in the diagnostic scan tool.
