Principles of Operation
An eLSD system ensures the rear wheels are receiving sufficient torque by use of an electronic control unit, and an infinitely variable clutch with pre-emptive controls. The system electronically monitors inputs from the rear wheel speed sensors and in the event of slippage, transfers additional torque to the rear wheels to stabilize traction.
The eLSD feature allows the ABS to override the engaged state during special maneuvers. In most instances the eLSD and ABS systems work in conjunction to deliver the torque to the rear wheels while reducing wheel slip.
If there is a malfunction in the eLSD system a "CHECK LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL" message is displayed in the IPC message center, letting the operator know the eLSD system is not functioning properly. Under harsh use the eLSD may overheat, or if a different than recommended size tire is installed, the IPC displays "ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL REDUCED TORQUE". Additionally, if the DCMR is not receiving all of the necessary HS-CAN signals this message may be displayed. In these cases the eLSD system goes into a "Limp Home" state, and operates at reduced torque. In the event the eLSD has overheated, or a different size tire is installed the IPC displays "ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL TEMPORARY DISABLED", indicating that the eLSD system is not active. Allowing the vehicle to cool down for a brief period of time alleviates the overheating condition. Removing the mismatched tire and installing the factory recommended size allows the eLSD to return to normal operation.
Electronic Locking Feature (if equipped)
The eLSD (if equipped) allows the operator to also use the eLSD as a locking rear axle. This feature is a function of the eLSD system and does not utilize any unique hardware. When the locking system is engaged both rear wheels turn at the same speed, providing additional traction on slippery and/or off road surfaces. The operator can engage the locking system per the chart below.

When the operator activates the locking feature, a green locker icon appears in the IPC. Additionally, a lock icon appears on the rear axle in the off road screen and trailer towing screen. If the vehicle is driven above the disengagement speed the icon will turn grey and the lock over the rear axle will disappear, alerting the driver that the rear axle is no longer locked, but the system is active. Once the vehicle speed drops below the re-engagement speed locker icon turn green, and the lock appears over the rear axle.
In order for the eLSD system to be fully functional, the following conditions must be met:
- HS-CAN information must be present (including wheel speeds, accelerator pedal, lateral acceleration, steering wheel angle, yaw rate, and powertrain torque).
- Operating range (Voltage 9.0 - 16 volts).
- Ignition must be in the ON position.
- Vehicle must be in a driven gear (D or R).
