Reductant Pump: Removal
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE:
Selective Catalyst Reduction (SRC)/Reductant system components are very sensitive to external contamination. Any possible measure should be taken to prevent contamination from entering the system while servicing it.
NOTE:
Fresh reductant should be the only lubricant used in the assembly of these components. The use of any other lubricant ESPECIALLY PETROLEUM BASED LUBES may cause damage to the system.
NOTE:
Petroleum contamination will cause permanent damage to the reductant system.
NOTE:
During the removal or installation of components, cap, tape or otherwise appropriately protect all openings and tubes/fittings to prevent the ingress of dirt or other contamination. Remove caps, tape and other protective materials prior to installation.
NOTE:
If a new reductant pump is being installed, prime the new reductant pump using the syringe included in the new reductant pump kit. The new reductant pump kit includes a detailed instruction sheet to assist with the syringe and the reductant pump priming.
- 1.
Remove the reductant tank. Refer to: Reductant Tank .
- 3.NOTE: Clean the reductant tank of any dirt or foreign material before servicing the reductant pump. Before removing the reductant pump, make sure that there is no residual dirt or foreign material around the reductant pump, the reductant heater and sender unit and the reductant heater and sender unit lock ring. If any dirt or foreign material enters the reductant tank O-ring area, damage to the reductant pump, reductant heater and sender unit or reductant system leaks may occur.
- Use regulated low pressure compressed air and a small screwdriver or brush as necessary, to dislodge and remove as much of the dirt and foreign material from the top of the reductant tank as possible. Be sure to remove all of the dirt and foreign material from the area where the reductant pump fastens to the top of the reductant heater and sender unit. Use regulated low pressure compressed air to dislodge any residual dirt and foreign material that may be trapped underneath the reductant pump as there is a 2 mm gap between the bottom of the reductant pump and the top of the reductant heater and sender unit.
-
NOTE: DO NOT use a pressure washer as this could force dirt and foreign material past the seals and into the ports on the reductant heater and sender unit.
Use clean low pressure water from a garden hose to wash out the area between the reductant pump and the reductant heater and sender unit.
- Use regulated low pressure compressed air to remove the residual water from the reductant pump and the reductant heater and sender unit, including the 2 mm gap between the reductant pump and the reductant heater and sender unit.
- 4.NOTE: Note the orientation of the reductant pump to the reductant heater and sender unit for correct reductant pump installation.
Disconnect the electrical connectors.
- 5.NOTE: Inverting of the reductant tank is necessary to prevent any dirt or foreign material from entering either of the 2 ports on the top of the reductant heater and sender unit when servicing the reductant pump. Dirt and foreign material entering these ports can damage the new reductant pump.
With the reductant tank inverted and holding the reductant pump in place, remove and discard the reductant pump Allen cap screws.
- 6.
Slowly remove the reductant pump from the reductant heater and sender unit and set the reductant pump aside.
- 7.
Remove and discard the O-rings from the reductant pump supply ports on the reductant heater and sender unit with a clean pick or small screwdriver.
- 8.NOTE: Using a flashlight, inspect the reductant pump supply ports in the reductant heater and sender unit for any dirt and foreign material that may have entered during the removal procedure.
If any dirt or foreign material are visible in the reductant pump supply ports of the reductant heater and sender unit, flush the reductant pump supply ports in the reductant heater and sender unit out with clean reductant using the syringe supplied in the kit with the new reductant pump. Further invert the tank if needed to allow the dirt and foreign material and reductant to clear from the ports.
