Timing Cover: Installation

  1. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive disks or other abrasive means to clean sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.

    Clean all mating surfaces.

    Material: Motorcraft ® Silicone Gasket Remover / ZC-30-A

    Material: Motorcraft ® Metal Surface Prep Wipes / ZC-31-B

  2. NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.
    NOTE: The component must be installed within 10 minutes of applying the sealant.

    Apply a bead of silicone sealant as needed.

    Material: Motorcraft ® Silicone Gasket and Sealant / TA-30 (WSE-M4G323-A4)

  3. NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.
    NOTE: The component must be installed within 10 minutes of applying the sealant.

    Apply a bead of silicone sealant as needed.

  4. Install the engine front cover and the bolts. Tighten in sequence shown.

    Torque:

    Stage 1: Bolts 1 - 3: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    Stage 2: Bolts 4 - 7: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    Stage 3: Bolt 8: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    Stage 4: Bolts 9 - 13: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    Stage 5: Bolt 14: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    Stage 6: Bolts 15 - 23: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  5. Install the coolant pump pulley and the bolts.

    Torque: 177 lb.in (20 Nm)

  6. Install the idler pulley and the bolt.

    Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

  7. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner and the bolts.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  8. NOTE: Make sure that a new component is installed.
    NOTE: Apply clean engine oil to the crankshaft front seal prior to installing.

    Using the special tool, install the crankshaft front seal. Use Special Service Tool: 303-096 (T74P-6150-A) Installer, Camshaft Front Oil Seal.

    Material: Motorcraft ® SAE 5W-20 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil / XO-5W20-QSP (WSS-M2C945-A)

  9. Install the following items:

    1. Install the engine mounting. Refer to: Engine Mount .
    2. Install the crankshaft pulley. Refer to: Crankshaft Pulley .
    3. Install the cowl panel. Refer to: Cowl Panel .

  10. Install the CKP sensor. Refer to: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor .
