Removal And Installation: Turbocharger: Removal

NOTE: Whenever the turbocharger air intake system components are removed, always cover the open ports to protect them from debris. It is important that no foreign material enter the system. The turbocharger compressor vanes are susceptible to damage from even small particles. All of the components should be inspected and cleaned, if needed, prior to installation or reassembly.
NOTE: Special attention needs to be given to the sealing ports for the oil feed, the oil drain, and the coolant lines, on turbocharged engines. The sealing ports must be totally clean and free from O-ring residue, have no damage to the sealing surface and the lines to ensure that there are no leaks or repeat repairs.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. NOTE: Do not pull the engine appearance cover forward or sideways to remove. Failure to press straight upward on the underside of the cover at the attachment points may result in damage to the cover or engine components.

    1. If equipped, place your hand under the engine appearance cover at each grommet location and push straight up to release each grommet from the studs.
    2. After all of the grommets have been released from the studs, remove the appearance cover from the engine.

  3. Remove the upper and lower Air Cleaner Outlet Pipes. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
  4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
    • Remove the retainers and the underbody shield.

    • Remove the retainers and the stone guard.

  5. Remove the Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Intake Pipe. Refer to: Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Intake Pipe .
  6. Remove the bolts from the exhaust isolator bracket.

  7. NOTE: If needed, mark the bracket to the transmission to make sure of proper placement during installation.

    Remove and the catalytic converter bracket retaining bolts.

  8. Remove the battery tray. Refer to: Battery Tray .
  9. Remove and discard the catalytic converter retaining nuts, then position the catalytic converter out of the way.

  10. Remove the turbocharger gasket and discard.

  11. Remove the turbocharger coolant tube bolts and then position the turbocharger coolant tubes out of the way.

  12. NOTE: Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.
    NOTE: Inspect the banjo bolt, the line surface for flatness and square-ness and the sealing surface for damage. ALWAYS USE NEW SEALING WASHERS. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.

    Remove and discard the turbocharger coolant tube sealing washers. Remove and discard the turbocharger coolant tube O-ring seals.

  13. Remove the upper turbocharger mounting nuts, remove the lower turbocharger heat shield retaining bolt and then remove the turbocharger heat shield.

  14. Remove the turbocharger oil supply tube retaining bolts and then remove the turbocharger oil supply tube.

  15. NOTE: Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.

    Remove and discard the turbocharger oil supply tube O-ring seal and the turbocharger oil supply tube bolt sealing washers.

  16. Remove and discard the turbocharger oil filter.

  17. Disconnect the turbocharger wastegate control hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  18. Remove the turbocharger oil return tube bolts and then remove the turbocharger oil return tube.

  19. NOTE: Inspect for blockage in the turbocharger tube. Check the tube, the sealing surfaces and the flange for flatness and damage. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.
    NOTE: Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.

    Remove and discard the turbocharger oil return tube O-ring seal and turbocharger oil return tube gasket.

  20. Detach the cylinder head temperature wiring harness retainer and then disconnect the cylinder head temperature electrical connector. Detach the turbocharger control valve vacuum tube retainers and position out of the way.

  21. Remove the lower turbocharger mounting nuts, then remove the turbocharger.
