Starter Motor: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
WARNING: Always disconnect the battery ground cable at the battery before disconnecting the starter motor battery terminal lead. If a tool is shorted at the starter motor battery terminal, the tool can quickly heat enough to cause a skin burn. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

  1. 1.

    With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .

  1. 2.

    Disconnect the battery. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .

  1. 3.

    Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .

  1. 4.

      Disconnect the quick release couplings. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    • Release the resonator assembly from the retainer, release the resonator assembly clamp and then position the resonator assembly out of the way.

  1. 5.

    1. 1.

      Remove the CAC outlet pipe retaining nut.

      Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

    1. 2.

      Loosen the CAC outlet pipe clamps and then remove the CAC outlet pipe.

      Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

  1. 6.

    1. 1.

      Remove the starter motor retaining bolts and then position the starter motor to disconnect the starter motor wiring.

      Torque: 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)

    1. 2.

      Remove the starter motor control wire retaining nut and then disconnect the starter motor control wire at the starter motor.

      Torque: 53 lb.in (6 Nm)

    1. 3.

      Remove the battery positive cable retaining nut and then disconnect the battery positive cable at the starter motor.

      Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

    • Remove the starter motor.

  1. 7.

    Inspect the starter motor drive gear and ring gear. Refer to: Starter Motor Drive Gear and Flywheel Ring Gear Inspection .
