- 1.
Remove the rear axle assembly. Refer to Axle Assembly .
- 6.
Using the Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture and Clutch Housing Gauge, measure the differential ring gear backlash.- 1.
Attach the Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture.
- 2.
Position the Clutch Housing Gauge tip centrally on a drive tooth.
- 3.
Zero the Dial Indicator Gauge.
- 4.
Turn the differential ring gear without turning the drive pinion gear. Record the Dial Indicator Gauge reading. The allowable backlash is mm (0.008 in) to 0.305 mm (0.012 in).- To correct for a high or low backlash, proceed as follows.
- 1.
- 7.
To correct for high or low backlash, increase the thickness of one differential bearing shim and decrease the thickness of the other differential bearing shim by the same amount. Refer to the following tables when adjusting the backlash.Backlash Change Required Thickness Change Required mm Inch mm Inch 0.025 0.001 0.050 0.002 0.050 0.002 0.050 0.002 0.076 0.003 0.101 0.004 0.101 0.004 0.152 0.006 0.127 0.005 0.152 0.006 0.152 0.006 0.203 0.008 0.177 0.007 0.254 0.010 0.203 0.008 0.254 0.010 0.228 0.009 0.304 0.012 0.254 0.010 0.355 0.014 0.279 0.011 0.355 0.014 0.304 0.012 0.406 0.016 0.330 0.013 0.457 0.018 0.335 0.014 0.457 0.018 0.381 0.015 0.508 0.020 Differential Shim Size Chart 4067

- 8.NOTE: Mark the position and location of the differential bearing caps as the arrows may not be visible. Always install the differential bearing caps in their original locations and positions or damage to the component may occur.
Remove the 4 differential bearing cap bolts and the 2 bearing caps.
- Remove the differential assembly.
- 10.NOTE: Differential bearing shims are to be installed with the chamfer facing outboard.
To establish differential bearing preload, using the Differential Shim Installer increase both the left and right differential bearing shim thickness by 0.152 mm (0.006 in).
- 12.
Rotate the differential assembly several times to verify the differential bearings have seated correctly.
- 13.
Using the Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture and Clutch Housing Gauge, recheck the differential ring gear backlash.
- 15.
Verify an acceptable pattern check. Refer to Tooth Contact Pattern Check in Driveline System General Information .
- 16.NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs, or other abrasive means to clean sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.
Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material. Refer to RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation in Engine System General Information .
- 17.NOTE: Install the differential housing cover within 15 minutes of applying the silicone material.NOTE: Allow the sealant to cure for one hour before filling the axle with lubricant.
Apply a continuous 4mm (0.157 in) bead of sealant, to the differential housing cover mounting surface.
- Use silicone gasket and sealant.
- 20.NOTE: The torque arm bolts must be tightened in the sequence below. If there is clearance in-between the head of the bolt and the torque arm, remove the torque arm bolts and reinstall following the sequence below.
Position the torque arm to the rear axle housing and install the new torque arm bolts hand tight.
- Tighten item 1 to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft).
- Tighten item 2 to 203 Nm (150 lb-ft).
- Tighten item 1 to 203 Nm (150 lb-ft).
- 21.
Install the rear axle assembly. Refer to Axle Assembly .
