System Operation: Indicators
4WD (4X4 L, 4X4 H And 4X4 A) Indicators
The IPC receives the 4WD status from the TCCM. If the vehicle is shifted into 4X4 auto, low or high, the TCCM sends the IPC the 4x4 auto, 4x4 high or 4x4 low message to illuminate the applicable indicator.
ABS /Brake/Stability-Traction Control System Indication
The brake and stability-traction control system indication is controlled by the ABS module, parking brake and brake fluid level switches though the BCM. The ABS module can request the IPC illuminate multiple indicators for various fault conditions. The following table provides a summary of the basic fault conditions and the indicators that are illuminated for each condition.

ABS Warning Indicator
The IPC receives the ABS warning indicator request from the ABS module to control the ABS warning indicator. If a fault condition exists in the ABS, the ABS module sends the IPC the ABS warning indicator request to either flash or illuminate the ABS warning indicator.
Airbag Warning Indicator
The IPC receives the restraints indicator request from the RCM. If a SRS concern is detected, the RCM sets a DTC and sends the restraints indicator request to the IPC to illuminate the airbag warning indicator.
Brake Warning Indicator
The IPC uses 3 basic messaged inputs to control the brake warning indicator. The first two inputs are for the parking brake position switch and the brake fluid level switch, which are sent from the BCM. The third is the brake warning indicator request sent from the ABS module.
The parking brake position switch is hardwired to the BCM through a single signal circuit while using a separate ground to control the input. The BCM provides a reference voltage to the parking brake position switch. When the parking brake is applied, the parking brake position switch closes to ground, pulling the reference voltage low.
The brake fluid level switch is hardwired to the BCM through separate signal and return circuits to control the input. The BCM provides a reference voltage to the brake fluid level switch. When a low brake fluid level condition exists, the brake fluid level switch closes to ground, pulling the signal and return circuits low. If the brake fluid level switch is disconnected, the BCM reference voltage provided to the brake fluid level switch is sent high.
When the BCM detects either the brake fluid level signal or the parking brake signal circuits low, or the brake fluid level signal and return circuit high, the BCM sends the IPC a brake warning indicator request.
When the ABS module detects a base brake system concern or other ABS related concerns that affect the EBD function, the ABS module sends a brake lamp request to the IPC to illuminate the brake warning indicator and the ABS warning indicator.
Charging System Warning Indicator
The charging system warning indicator is controlled by the IPC based upon the battery charge low message received from the BCM. When a fault is detected in the charging system, the BCM sends the IPC the battery charge low message to illuminate the charging system warning indicator.
Door And Liftgate Ajar
The IPC provides a door ajar warning indicator along with message displays to indicate the status of the doors or liftgate. The BCM monitors each of the ajar inputs and sends the specific door ajar status message to the IPC to display the ajar warning indicator and corresponding warning message.
Engine Over-Temperature Warning Indicator
The IPC provides the temperature warning indicator to alert the driver the engine is over temperature. The IPC uses 2 inputs to control the engine over-temperature warning indicator. When the engine temperature is high, the PCM sends the IPC the engine coolant temperature message to illuminate the engine over-temperature warning indicator. If the PCM determines the engine temperature is high enough to intervene, the PCM enters into a mitigation strategy to attempt to reduce the engine temperature and sends the IPC the engine overheat mitigation active message to illuminate the engine over-temperature warning indicator.
Front Fog Lamp Indicator
When the front fog lamps are turned on, the BCM sends the fog lamp status message to the IPC to illuminate the front fog lamp indicator.
High Beam Indicator
When the high beams are turned on, the BCM sends a headlamp high beam indicator request to the IPC to illuminate the high beam indicator.
Hill Descent Indicator
The IPC uses the hill descent indicator to inform the driver the hill descent function is active. When the hill descent system has been switched on by the driver, the ABS module sends the IPC the hill descent indication message to illuminate the hill descent indicator. The hill descent indicator illuminates whenever the switch has been engaged regardless of what mode the hill descent system is in (ready, active control or overheat).
Lights On Indicator
When the parking lamps are turned on, the BCM sends the parklamp status message to the IPC to illuminate the lights on indicator.
Low Fuel Indicator
To supplement the fuel gauge indication, the IPC provides the low fuel indicator. When the fuel level reaches 1/16 of a tank or 1/8 of a tank for MyKey ® users, the IPC illuminates the low fuel indicator.
Low Oil Pressure Warning Indicator
The engine oil pressure switch is hardwired to the PCM. When the engine oil pressure is low, the PCM provides the oil pressure warning indicator request to the IPC.
Low Washer Fluid Indicator
The IPC controls the low washer fluid based on the hardwired low washer fluid switch status. When the washer fluid is low, the low washer fluid switch closes to ground and the IPC illuminates the low washer fluid indicator.
Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Indicator
The IPC provides a powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator to indicate transmission, ETC and 4WD concerns. The IPC receives the transmission service required and engine service required messages from the PCM. The IPC receives the 4x4 range fault message from the TCCM. When a concern exists in any of the 3 powertrain systems, the PCM or TCCM sends a message to the IPC to illuminate the powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator.
Rear Fog Lamp Indicator (If Equipped)
When the rear fog lamps are turned on, the Rear Lighting Control Module A (RLCMA) sends the rear fog lamp indicator request to the IPC to illuminate the rear fog lamp indicator.
Safety Belt Warning Indicator
The RCM monitors the safety belt position through the safety belt buckle switch. When the safety belt is unbuckled, the RCM sends a safety belt indicator request to the IPC to illuminate the safety belt warning indicator.
Stability-Traction Control Indicator (Sliding Car Icon)
The IPC uses the stability-traction control indicator request message from the ABS module to control the stability-traction control indicator (sliding car icon). The stability-traction control indicator (sliding car icon) flashes when the vehicle stability-traction control is in active mode or is being controlled by the ABS module. The stability-traction control indicator (sliding car icon) illuminates continuously if a fault condition exists in the stability-traction control system. The IPC monitors the stability-traction control indicator request message from the ABS module and either flashes the stability-traction control indicator (sliding car icon) or illuminates it steady depending on the condition.
Stability-Traction Control Disabled Indicator (Sliding Car OFF Icon)
The stability-traction control is turned on/off through the traction control disable switch hardwired to the IPC. When the stability-traction control is switched on or off, the IPC sends the stability-traction control mode request to the ABS module. The ABS either enables or disables the stability-traction control system and sends the stability-traction control indicator request message to the IPC to illuminate or turn off the stability-traction control disabled indicator (sliding car OFF icon) based upon the system state. The stability-traction control system defaults back on or enabled once the ignition is cycled off then back on again.
When a MyKey ® programmed key is in use and the AdvanceTrac ® feature is configured always on, the traction control system cannot be disabled and the stability-traction control disabled indicator (sliding car OFF icon) does not illuminate when the traction control disable button is pressed. The stability-traction control indicator still functions normally to indicate a stability-traction control system fault and a stability-traction control active event.
TPMS Indicator
The BCM receives the tire pressure data from the TPM and continuously monitors the tire pressure data. The IPC receives the TPMS indicator message from the BCM.
If the BCM determines the tire pressure has exceeded the low tire pressure limits, the tire pressure indicator message is sent to the IPC to illuminate the TPMS warning indicator. If a TPMS fault condition exists, the BCM sends the tire pressure indicator message to the IPC to flash the TPMS warning indicator.
Turn Signal-Hazard Indicator
When the multifunction switch is in the LH or RH turn position or if the hazard switch is on, the BCM sends the turn signal command message to the IPC. Upon receipt of the applicable turn signal on/off command, the IPC flashes the turn signal indicator on and off.
MIL
The MIL is controlled by the IPC using the MIL request from the PCM.
Tow Haul Indicator
The tow haul indicator illuminates when the tow haul system has been engaged and is actively providing tow haul control for the vehicle. When the vehicle is actively providing tow haul control, the PCM sends the transmission tow haul mode message to the IPC to illuminate the tow haul indicator.
