Removal And Installation: Turbocharger: Removal
All vehicles
- 1.
With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- 2.NOTE: Do not pull the engine appearance cover forward or sideways to remove. Failure to press straight upward on the underside of the cover at the attachment points may result in damage to the cover or engine components.
- Place your hand under the engine appearance cover at each grommet location and push straight up to release each grommet from the studs.
- After all of the grommets have been released from the studs, remove the appearance cover from the engine.
- 3.
Remove the cowl panel. Refer to: Cowl Panel .
- 4.
Drain the cooling system. Refer to: COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING AND VACUUM FILLING - 2.0L EcoBoost (184kW/250PS) - MI4.
- 5.
Remove the RHF tire. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .
- 8.
Disconnect the TC bypass valve electrical connector and detach the harness retainer from the studbolt. Disconnect the TC bypass hose clamp and the TC bypass hose.Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- 9.
Remove the TC outlet pipe retaining nuts. Loosen the TC outlet pipe clamps and then remove the TC outlet pipe.
- 10.
Disconnect the crankcase vent tube quick release coupling. Remove the TC inlet pipe retainers. Refer to: QUICK RELEASE COUPLING - 2.0L EcoBoost (184kW/250PS) - MI4.
- 12.
Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to: CATALYTIC CONVERTER - 2.0L EcoBoost (184kW/250PS) - MI4.
- 14.NOTE: Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area.
Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.
NOTE: Inspect the banjo bolt, the line surface for flatness and square-ness and the sealing surface for damage. ALWAYS USE NEW SEALING WASHERS.Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.
Remove and discard the turbocharger coolant tube sealing washers. Remove and discard the turbocharger coolant tube O-ring seals.

Remove the upper TC mounting nuts, remove the lower TC heat shield retaining bolt and then remove the TC heat shield.
- 17.NOTE: Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area.
Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.
NOTE: Inspect the banjo bolt, the line surface for flatness and square-ness and the sealing surface for damage. ALWAYS USE NEW SEALING WASHERS.Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.
Remove and discard the turbocharger oil supply tube O-ring seal and the turbocharger oil supply tube bolt sealing washers.

- 21.NOTE: Inspect for blockage in the turbocharger tube. Check the tube, the sealing surfaces and the flange for flatness and damage.
Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.
NOTE: Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area.Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.
Remove and discard the turbocharger oil return tube O-ring seal and turbocharger oil return tube gasket.

AWD (all-wheel drive) vehicles
- 22.
Remove the engine mount. Refer to: ENGINE MOUNT - 2.0L EcoBoost (184kW/250PS) - MI4.
- 23.
Lower the floor jack 11 mm (.4330 in).Use the General Equipment: Trolley Jack
Use the General Equipment: Wooden Block
- 24.
Detach the CHT wiring harness retainer and then disconnect the CHT electrical connector. Detach the TC control valve vacuum tube retainers and position aside.
