Instrument Panel: Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure in this service information, refer to Safety Warnings in GENERAL INFORMATION . Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

    Refer to: HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .

  2. Evacuate and recover the A/C  refrigerant.

    Refer to: AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) SYSTEM RECOVERY, EVACUATION AND CHARGING .

  3. Remove the cowl panel grille.

    Refer to: COWL PANEL GRILLE .

  5. Torque  : 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  6. NOTE: Make sure all openings are sealed.

    Torque  : 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

  8. Remove both front doors.

    Refer to: FRONT DOOR .

  9. Remove the floor console.

    Refer to: FLOOR CONSOLE - VEHICLES WITHOUT: CENTER ARMREST .

    Refer to: FLOOR CONSOLE - VEHICLES WITH: CENTER ARMREST .

  10. WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Ignition must remain OFF until repair is complete. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

    Turn the ignition off, wait at least one minute.

  11. Remove the automatic transmission selector lever or the manual transmission gearshift lever.

    Refer to: SELECTOR LEVER ASSEMBLY .

    Refer to: GEARSHIFT LEVER - 5-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION - B5/IB5/5-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION - MTX75 .

    Refer to: GEARSHIFT LEVER - 6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION - B6/6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION - MMT6 .

  12. Position the parking brake control aside.

    Torque  : 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)

  20. NOTE: Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the steering column shaft is disconnected, or damage to the clockspring may result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, remove and recenter the clockspring. REFER to the clockspring removal and installation procedure in SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .

    Remove and discard the steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt and disconnect the steering column shaft from the steering gear.

    Torque  : 21 lb.ft (28 Nm)

  29. NOTE: To avoid damaging the instrument panel, an assistant is required when carrying out the following steps.
    NOTE: RH  side shown in illustration below, LH  side similar.
    NOTE: Remove the bolts from one side completely and support the instrument panel before removing the bolts from the opposite side.

    Torque  : 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  30. NOTE: Make sure that all electrical connectors and wiring are not hindered before removing the instrument panel or damage to the components may occur.

    Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.

  31. Rotate the instrument panel face down and remove through the LH  front door opening.
