Pinpoint Test AJ: The Compass Is Inoperative

NOTE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. AJ1 CHECK THE COMPASS DISPLAY 
    • Ignition ON.
    • Check the compass display in the lower LH corner of the FDIM.
    • Does the compass display illuminate? 
  2. AJ2 CHECK THE COMPASS MODULE VOLTAGE SUPPLY AT THE INTERIOR AUTO-DIMMING MIRROR 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Auto-Dimming Interior Mirror C9039.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure the voltage  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C9039-1 CBP41 (BU) - Ground

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    • Yes  : GO to AJ3.
    • No  : VERIFY the Smart Junction Box (SJB) fuse 41 (15A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. If not OK, REFER to the OEM WIRING DIAGRAMS to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
  3. AJ3 CHECK THE INTERIOR AUTO-DIMMING MIRROR GROUND FOR CONTINUITY AT THE MIRROR 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Negative Battery Cable.
    • Measure the voltage  between:
      WITH VIDEO DISPLAY

      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C9039-1 CBP41 (BU) C9039-3 GD139 (BK/YE)
      WITHOUT VIDEO DISPLAY

      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C9039-1 CBP41 (BU) C9039-4 GD139 (BK/YE)

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    • Yes  : GO to AJ4.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. AJ4 CHECK THE DTCs IN THE FDIM 
    • Connect: Auto-Dimming Interior Mirror C9039.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Clear the FDIM DTCs.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Wait 10 seconds.
    • Retrieve the FDIM DTCs.
    • Is DTC U0155:00 present? 
  5. AJ5 CHECK THE COMPASS DATA + AND DATA - CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Auto-Dimming Interior Mirror C9039.
    • Disconnect: IPC C220.
    • Measure the voltage  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C9039-10 VMC30 (BU/GY) - Ground
      C9039-9 VMC31 (GY/BY) - Ground

    • Is any voltage present? 
    • Yes  : REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • No  : GO to AJ6.
  6. AJ6 CHECK THE COMPASS DATA PLUS (+) CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Measure the resistance  between:
      WITH CAMERA MIRROR

      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C220-10 VMC31 (GY/BY) C9039-9 VMC31 (GY/BY)

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to AJ7.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  7. AJ7 CHECK THE COMPASS DATA PLUS (+) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Measure the resistance  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C220-10 VMC31 (GY/BY) - Ground

    • Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to AJ8.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  8. AJ8 CHECK THE COMPASS DATA MINUS (-) CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C220-9 VMC30 (BU/GY) C9039-10 VMC30 (BU/GY)

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to AJ9.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  9. AJ9 CHECK THE COMPASS DATA MINUS (-) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Measure the resistance  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C220-9 VMC30 (BU/GY) - Ground

    • Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to AJ10.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  10. AJ10 CHECK FOR DTC U0161:87 OR DTC U0161:92 
    • Connect: IPC C220.
    • Connect: Auto-Dimming Interior Mirror C9039.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Clear the IPC DTCs.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Wait 10 seconds.
    • Retrieve the IPC DTCs.
    • Is DTC U0161:87 or DTC U0161:92 present? 
  11. AJ11 CHECK FOR CORRECT IPC OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the IPC connector.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect the IPC connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    • Yes  : INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
