Pinpoint Test C: The Steering Wheel Switch(Es) Illumination Is Inoperative

  1. C1 INSPECT THE STEERING WHEEL SWITCH ILLUMINATION 
    • Ignition ON.
    • Turn the parking lamps on.
    • Press the dimmer switch up until the illumination reaches full brightness.

    Is all of the steering wheel switch illumination inoperative? 

    • Yes  : Go to C2 
    • No  : For the LH  lower switch, Go to  C6

      For the RH  lower switch, Go to  C7

      For the LH  and RH  upper switch, Go to  C8

  2. C2 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AND GROUND AT THE SASM (STEERING ANGLE SENSOR MODULE) AND CLOCKSPRING 
    • Turn the parking lamps off.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect SASM C226A  .
    • Disconnect Clockspring C218A  .
    • Ignition ON.
    • Turn the parking lamps on.
    • Press the dimmer switch up until the illumination reaches full brightness.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C226A-12  VOLTAGE C218A-4 

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    • Yes  : Go to  C4
    • No  : Go to C3 
  3. C3 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE SASM (STEERING ANGLE SENSOR MODULE) 
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C226A-12  VOLTAGE Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    • Yes  : REPAIR the ground circuit.
    • No  : REPAIR the illumination circuit.
  4. C4 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE STEERING WHEEL HARNESS AT THE CLOCKSPRING 
    • Connect SASM C226A  .
    • Connect Clockspring C218A  .
    • Depower the SRS  and remove the driver airbag.

      Refer to: DRIVER AIRBAG .

    • Disconnect Clockspring C218B  .
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C218B-7 (Clockspring Component Side) VOLTAGE C218B-10 (Clockspring Component Side)

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    • Yes  : CONNECT clockspring C218B  .

      For LH  lower switch only, Go to  C6

      For multiple steering wheel switches, INSTALL a new steering wheel.

      Refer to: STEERING WHEEL .

    • No  : Go to C5 
  5. C5 CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Remove the clockspring.

      Refer to: CLOCKSPRING .

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C218B-7 (Clockspring Component Side) OHM C218C-7 (Clockspring Component side)
    • Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C218B-10 (Clockspring Component Side) OHM C218A-4 (Clockspring Component Side)

    Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 

  6. C6 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT THE LH (LEFT-HAND) LOWER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH 
    • Turn the parking lamps off.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Depower the SRS  and remove the driver airbag.

      Refer to: DRIVER AIRBAG .

    • Disconnect LH  Lower Steering Wheel Switch C2366  .
    • Ignition ON.
    • Turn the parking lamps on.
    • Press the dimmer switch up until the illumination reaches full brightness.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2366-1  VOLTAGE C2366-5 

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

  7. C7 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT THE RH (RIGHT-HAND) LOWER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH 
    • Turn the parking lamps off.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Depower the SRS  and remove the driver airbag.

      Refer to: DRIVER AIRBAG .

    • Disconnect RH  Lower Steering Wheel Switch C2367  .
    • Ignition ON.
    • Turn the parking lamps on.
    • Press the dimmer switch up until the illumination reaches full brightness.
    • Measure:

      Without Sony® Sound 

      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2367-1  VOLTAGE C2367-4 

      With Sony® Sound 

      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2367-2  VOLTAGE C2367-3 

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

  8. C8 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE UPPER (AIRBAG) HARNESS 
    • Turn the parking lamps off.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Depower the SRS  and remove the driver airbag.

      Refer to: DRIVER AIRBAG .

    • Ignition ON.
    • Disconnect Inline C260  .
    • Turn the parking lamps on.
    • Press the dimmer switch up until the illumination reaches full brightness.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C260-3  (Steering Wheel Side) VOLTAGE C260-2  (Steering Wheel Side)

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    • Yes  : For the LH  upper switch, Go to C9 

      For the RH  upper switch, Go to  C10

    • No  : INSTALL a new steering wheel.

      Refer to: STEERING WHEEL .

  9. C9 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT THE LH (LEFT-HAND) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH 
    • Turn the parking lamps off.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Connect Inline C260  .
    • Disconnect LH  upper steering wheel switch C2998  .
    • Ignition ON.
    • Turn the parking lamps on.
    • Press the dimmer switch up until the illumination reaches full brightness.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2998-1  VOLTAGE C2998-4 

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

  10. C10 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT THE RH (RIGHT-HAND) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH 
    • Turn the parking lamps off.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Connect Inline C260  .
    • Disconnect RH  Upper Steering Wheel Switch C2999  .
    • Ignition ON.
    • Turn the parking lamps on.
    • Press the dimmer switch up until the illumination reaches full brightness.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2999-2  VOLTAGE C2999-3 

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
