Pinpoint Test J: The Steering Wheel Switch Illumination Is Inoperative Or Always On

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2014 Ford Fusion. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. J1 INSPECT THE NON-NETWORKED ILLUMINATION SOURCES
    • Ignition ON.
    • Turn the parking lamps ON.
    • While pressing the instrument panel dimmer switch up and down, monitor the non-networked illumination sources.

Are all of the non-networked illumination sources inoperative or always on?

    • Yes  : If all non-networked illumination sources are always on, GO to PINPOINT TEST D

If all non-networked illumination sources are inoperative, GO to PINPOINT TEST B

    • No  : If one or more steering wheel switch illumination is always on, INSTALL new steering wheel switches for the affected parts.

REFER to: STEERING WHEEL MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH .

If one or more (but not all) steering wheel switch illumination is inoperative, GO to  J5

If all  steering wheel switch illumination is inoperative, GO to J2

  2. J2 CHECK FOR ILLUMINATION VOLTAGE AND GROUND AT THE CLOCKSPRING
    • Turn the parking lamps OFF.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Wait 1 minute to depower the SRS.
    • Disconnect Clockspring C218A  .
    • Ignition ON.
    • Place a shop light over the ambient light sensor to make sure the illumination can reach maximum brightness.
    • Turn the parking lamps ON.
    • Press the instrument panel dimmer switch up until the illumination reaches full brightness.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C218A-1  VOLTAGE C218A-4

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

    • Yes  : GO to  J4
    • No  : GO to J3
  3. J3 CHECK FOR ILLUMINATION VOLTAGE AT THE CLOCKSPRING
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C218A-1  OHM Ground

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

    • Yes  : REPAIR circuit VLN04.
    • No  : REPAIR circuit GD214.
  4. J4 CHECK THE ILLUMINATION CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN IN BETWEEN THE CLOCKSPRING AND THE STEERING WHEEL SWITCHES
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Turn the parking lamps OFF.
    • Remove the driver airbag,

      REFER to: DRIVER AIRBAG .

    • Disconnect LH Steering Wheel Switch.
    • Disconnect Clockspring C218B  .
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2490-8  OHM C218B-11

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

    • Yes  : INSTALL a new clockspring.

      REFER to: CLOCKSPRING .

    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. If the circuit cannot be repaired, INSTALL a new steering wheel.

      REFER to: STEERING WHEEL .

  5. J5 CHECK FOR ILLUMINATION VOLTAGE AND GROUND TO THE STEERING WHEEL SWITCHES
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Turn the parking lamps OFF.
    • Remove the driver airbag,

      REFER to: DRIVER AIRBAG .

    • Disconnect inoperative illumination source.
    • Place a shop light over the ambient light sensor to make sure the illumination can reach maximum brightness.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Turn the parking lamps ON.
    • Press the instrument panel dimmer switch up until the illumination reaches full brightness.
    • Measure:

      LH steering wheel switch

      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2490-8  VOLTAGE C2490-2

      RH steering wheel switch

      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2491-8  VOLTAGE C2491-2

      LH paddle shifter (if equipped)

      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2429-1  VOLTAGE C2429-2

      RH paddle shifter (if equipped)

      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2428-4  VOLTAGE C2428-3

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

  6. J6 CHECK FOR ILLUMINATION VOLTAGE AT THE STEERING WHEEL SWITCH
    • Measure:

      LH steering wheel switch

      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2490-8  VOLTAGE Ground
