Pinpoint Test R: The RKE Transmitter Is Inoperative (With IA)

NOTE: All the customer IA keys need to be present when diagnosing the RKE system.
  1. R1 CHECK FOR THE CORRECT IA KEY 
    • Check that the correct IA keys are used with the vehicle.
    • Are the correct IA keys present? 
    • Yes  : GO to R2.
    • No  : The system cannot be tested without the correct IA keys. INFORM the customer the correct IA keys must be present to proceed with diagnosis of the system.
  2. R2 CHECK THE BUTTONS ON THE SUSPECT IA KEY 
    • Press the buttons on the IA key (twice for the liftgate release).
    • Do any of the functions operate? 
  3. R3 CHECK FOR COMMUNICATION WITH THE BCM AND RFA MODULE 
    • Using a scan tool, perform a network test.
    • Does the BCM and RFA module pass the network test? 
  4. R4 CHECK FOR RFA MODULE DTCs 
    • Using a scan tool, perform the RFA module self-test.
    • Is DTC U201F:00, U201F:13 or U201F:87 present? 
    • Yes  : GO to  R10.
    • No  : GO to R5.
  5. R5 RESYNCHRONIZE THE INOPERATIVE IA KEY 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Within 30 seconds, press any button on the suspect IA key 3 consecutive times.
    • Check the operation of the suspect IA key.
    • Does the suspect IA key operate correctly? 
    • Yes  : The system is OK. The concern was caused by an IA key out of synchronization.
    • No  : If an individual IA key is inoperative, GO to R6.

      If both IA keys are inoperative, GO to  R7.

  6. R6 RESYNCHRONIZE THE INOPERATIVE IA KEY USING THE SECOND IA KEY 
    • Press any button on the operational IA key.
    • Within 30 seconds, press any button on the suspect IA key.
    • Check the operation of the suspect IA key.
    • Does the suspect IA key operate correctly? 
    • Yes  : The system is OK. The concern was caused by an IA key out of synchronization.
    • No  : GO to R7.
  7. R7 CHECK THE IA KEY PROGRAMMING 
    • Place the IA key in the PATS transceiver slot.
    • Attempt to start the engine.
    • Does the engine start? 
  8. R8 CHECK THE IA KEY BATTERY 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Open the IA key.
    • Do not clean off any grease from the battery terminals on the back surface of the circuit board.
    • Verify the correct battery is used (CR2032).
    • Remove the IA key battery and measure the voltage.
    • Is the voltage greater than 2.5 volts? 
    • Yes  : GO to R9.
    • No  : INSTALL a new battery (make sure the battery is seated correctly). DO NOT reprogram the RKE transmitter (weak or dead batteries do not erase TICs from memory).
  9. R9 CHECK FOR NORMAL OPERATION WITH A KNOWN GOOD IA KEY 
    • Using a known good or the customer's second IA key, press a button on the IA key.
    • Is the concern still present? 
  10. R10 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE RFR MODULE 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: RFR Module C9026.
    • Measure the voltage  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C9026-3 SBP21 (GY/RD) - Ground

    • Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 
    • Yes  : GO to  R12.
    • No  : VERIFY BCM fuse 81 (5A) is OK. If OK, GO to R11. If not OK, REFER to the appropriate OEM WIRING DIAGRAMS to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
  11. R11 CHECK THE RFR MODULE VOLTAGE SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: BCM C2280H.
    • Measure the resistance  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C9026-3 SBP21 (GY/RD) C2280H-19 SBP21 (GY/RD)

    • Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to  R23.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit.
  12. R12 CHECK THE RFR MODULE GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C9026-2 GD138 (BK/WH) - Ground

    • Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to R13.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit.
  13. R13 CHECK THE RFR MODULE COMMUNICATION CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Disconnect: RFA Module C4392D.
    • Disconnect: Ignition Relay.
    • Connect a fused jumper wire  between:
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      3 SBF03 (BU/RD) 5 CDC21 (GN/BN)

    • Measure the voltage  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C9026-1 VRT22 (GY/BN) - Ground

    • Is any voltage present? 
    • Yes  : GO to R14.
    • No  : REMOVE the fused jumper wire. INSTALL the ignition relay. GO to  R16.
  14. R14 ISOLATE THE RFR MODULE COMMUNICATION CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Disconnect: BCM C2280B.
    • Measure the voltage  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C9026-1 VRT22 (GY/BN) - Ground

    • Is any voltage present? 
    • Yes  : GO to R15.
    • No  : REMOVE the fused jumper wire. INSTALL the ignition relay. REPAIR circuit VPL56 (BU/GY) for a short to voltage.
  15. R15 ISOLATE THE BCM FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Disconnect: BCM C2280H.
    • Measure the voltage  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C9026-1 VRT22 (GY/BN) - Ground

    • Is any voltage present? 
    • Yes  : REMOVE the fused jumper wire. INSTALL the ignition relay. REPAIR circuit VRT22 (GY/BN) for a short to voltage.
    • No  : REMOVE the fused jumper wire. INSTALL the ignition relay. GO to  R23.
  16. R16 CHECK THE RFR MODULE COMMUNICATION CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Measure the resistance  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C9026-1 VRT22 (GY/BN) - Ground

    • Is resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to  R19.
    • No  : GO to R17.
  17. R17 ISOLATE THE RFR MODULE COMMUNICATION CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Disconnect: BCM C2280B.
    • Measure the resistance  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C9026-1 VRT22 (GY/BN) - Ground

    • Is resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 
    • Yes  : REPAIR circuit VPL56 (BU/GY) for a short to ground.
    • No  : GO to R18.
  18. R18 ISOLATE THE BCM FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Disconnect: BCM C2280H.
    • Measure the resistance  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C9026-1 VRT22 (GY/BN) - Ground

    • Is resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to  R23.
    • No  : REPAIR circuit VRT22 (GY/BN) for a short to ground.
  19. R19 CHECK THE RFR MODULE COMMUNICATION CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C9026-1 VRT22 (GY/BN) C4392D-14 VPL56 (BU/GY)

    • Is resistance less than 3 ohms? 
  20. R20 CHECK THE RFR MODULE COMMUNICATION CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN BETWEEN THE RFA MODULE AND THE BCM 
    • Disconnect: BCM C2280B.
    • Measure the resistance  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C4392D-14 VPL56 (BU/GY) C2280B-59 VPL56 (BU/GY)

    • Is resistance less than 3 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to R21.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit.
  21. R21 CHECK THE RFR MODULE COMMUNICATION CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN BETWEEN THE RFR MODULE AND THE BCM 
    • Disconnect: BCM C2280H.
    • Measure the resistance  between:
      Positive Lead Negative Lead
      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      C9026-1 VRT22 (GY/BN) C2280H-10 VRT22 (GY/BN)

    • Is resistance less than 3 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to  R23.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit.
  22. R22 CHECK FOR CORRECT RFA MODULE OPERATION 
    • Disconnect and inspect all the RFA module connectors.
    • Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    • Reconnect the RFA module connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    • Yes  : CHECK On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new RFA module. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES .
    • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  23. R23 CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect and inspect all the BCM connectors.
    • Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    • Reconnect the BCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    • Yes  : CHECK On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new BCM. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES .
    • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
