Pinpoint Test C: The Steering Wheel Switch(Es) Illumination Is Inoperative

  1. C1 CHECK ALL STEERING WHEEL SWITCH(ES) ILLUMINATION 
    • Ignition ON.
    • Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
    • Place a shop light above the instrument panel ambient light sensor to make sure the BCM  outputs maximum illumination voltage.
    • Press and hold the instrument panel dimmer switch up to the full illumination position.

    Are all the steering wheel switches inoperative? 

    • Yes  : GO to C2 
    • No  : For the LH  lower switch, GO to  C6

      For the RH  lower switch, GO to  C7

      For the LH  and/or RH  upper switch, GO to  C8

  2. C2 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE STEERING WHEEL SWITCHES 
    • Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
    • Disconnect: SASM C226A. 
    • Disconnect: Clockspring C218A. 
    • Ignition ON.
    • Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
    • Press and hold the instrument panel dimmer switch up to the full illumination position.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C226A-12  VOLTAGE C218A-4 

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    • Yes  : GO to  C4
    • No  : GO to C3 
  3. C3 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE SASM (STEERING ANGLE SENSOR MODULE) 
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C226A-12  VOLTAGE Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    • Yes  : REPAIR the ground circuit.
    • No  : REPAIR the illumination circuit.
  4. C4 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE STEERING WHEEL HARNESS 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Connect: SASM C226A. 
    • Connect: Clockspring C218A.
    • WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

      Ignition OFF and wait one minute.

    • Remove the driver airbag.

      REFER to: DRIVER AIRBAG .

    • Disconnect: Clockspring C218B.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C218B-7  component side VOLTAGE C218B-10  component side

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    • Yes  : INSTALL a new steering wheel.

      REFER to: STEERING WHEEL .

    • No  : GO to C5 
  5. C5 CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Remove the clockspring.

      REFER to: CLOCKSPRING .

    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C218B-10  component side OHM C218A-4  component side
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C218B-7  component side OHM C218C-7  component side

    Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 

  6. C6 CHECK THE LH (LEFT-HAND) LOWER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Connect: Clockspring C218B.
    • Disconnect: LH  Lower Steering Wheel Switch C2366.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2366-1  VOLTAGE C2366-5 

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

  7. C7 CHECK THE RH (RIGHT-HAND) LOWER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: RH  Lower Steering Wheel Switch C2367.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2367-1  VOLTAGE C2367-4 

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

  8. C8 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE UPPER (AIRBAG) HARNESS 
    WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Ignition OFF and wait one minute.
    • Remove the driver airbag.

      REFER to: DRIVER AIRBAG .

    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C260-3  Male VOLTAGE C260-2  Male

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    • Yes  : For the LH  upper switch, GO to C9 

      For the RH  upper switch, GO to  C10

    • No  : INSTALL a new steering wheel.

      REFER to: STEERING WHEEL .

  9. C9 CHECK THE LH (LEFT-HAND) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Connect: Inline C260.
    • Disconnect: LH  Upper Steering Wheel Switch C2998.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2998-1  VOLTAGE C2998-4 

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

  10. C10 CHECK THE RH (RIGHT-HAND) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Connect: Inline C260  .
    • Disconnect: RH  Upper Steering Wheel Switch C2999.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2999-2  VOLTAGE C2999-3 

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
