Pinpoint Test AB: The Chime Sounds When The Driver Door Is Ajar (No Key In Ignition And Headlamps Off)

Normal Operation

The ignition switch is hardwired to the Instrument Cluster (IC) for the key-in-ignition warning status. When the key is inserted into the ignition lock cylinder, the key-in-ignition switch closes, supplying voltage to the IC (Instrument Cluster). The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) monitors the driver door ajar status and provides the IC (Instrument Cluster) with a messaged driver door ajar status over the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) communication bus. The IC (Instrument Cluster) monitors both the hardwired key-in-ignition input and the messaged driver door ajar input. When the key is inserted into the ignition lock cylinder with the driver door open or ajar, the IC (Instrument Cluster) sounds the key-in-ignition warning chime.

The IC (Instrument Cluster) receives the headlamp switch status from the headlamp switch through hardwired circuitry. The headlamps on warning chime sounds when the driver door is opened with the ignition switch in the OFF position, the key is not in the ignition lock cylinder, and the headlamp switch is in the PARKING LAMPS or HEADLAMP ON position.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Wiring, terminals or connectors

- Key-in-ignition warning switch (part of the ignition switch)

- IC (Instrument Cluster)

PINPOINT TEST AB : THE CHIME SOUNDS WHEN THE DRIVER DOOR IS AJAR (NO KEY IN IGNITION AND HEADLAMPS OFF)

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

AB1 CHECK THE IC (Instrument Cluster) ILLUMINATION

- Verify the IC (Instrument Cluster) is not illuminated with the headlamp switch off.

Does the IC (Instrument Cluster) illumination operate correctly?

Yes
GO to AB2.

No
REFER to Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.

AB2 CHECK THE KEY-IN-IGNITION INPUT CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE

- Ignition OFF.

- Remove the key from the ignition lock cylinder.

- Disconnect: IC (Instrument Cluster) C220A.

- Measure the voltage between the IC (Instrument Cluster) C220A-15, circuit 31S-TA31 (BK/RD), harness side and ground.





Is any voltage present?

Yes
GO to AB3.

No
GO to AB4.

AB3 CHECK THE KEY-IN-IGNITION INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

- Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250.

- Measure the voltage between the IC (Instrument Cluster) C220A-15, circuit 31S-TA31 (BK/RD), harness side and ground.





Is any voltage present?

Yes
REPAIR circuit 31S-TA31 (BK/RD) for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
INSTALL a new ignition switch. TEST the system for normal operation.

AB4 CHECK FOR CORRECT IC (Instrument Cluster) OPERATION

- Disconnect all the IC (Instrument Cluster) connectors.

- Check for:
- corrosion

- damaged pins

- pushed-out pins


- Connect all the IC (Instrument Cluster) connectors and make sure they seat correctly.

- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?

Yes
INSTALL a new IC (Instrument Cluster). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
