Section 1874 (Automatic Transmission - 5R110W (TORQSHIFT(R)) -- F450 & F550 Super Duty): Removal: Transmission: Removal

All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Disconnect the battery. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  3. Remove the exhaust Y-pipe. For additional information, refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM .

    Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles 

  4. Remove the transfer case assembly. For additional information, refer to TRANSFER CASE .

    Vehicles equipped with 4WD and a manual shift transfer case 

  5. Remove the transfer case linkage bolt and position the transfer case linkage aside.

  6. Remove the bolt and remove the transfer case linkage bracket.

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles 

    7. NOTE: If a pry area is not available on the driveshaft side, it may be necessary to tap the driveshaft yoke with a plastic or rubber soft-faced hammer.
    NOTE: Index-mark the driveshaft flanges.
  7. Remove and discard the 4 driveshaft-to-transmission flange bolts. Disconnect the driveshaft from the transmission.
    • Using mechanic's wire, support the driveshaft.

    All vehicles 

    8. NOTE: If transmission disassembly is required, drain the transmission fluid.

  8. Remove the transmission fluid pan drain plug and allow the transmission fluid to drain.
  9. Install the transmission fluid pan drain plug.
    • Tighten to 18 Nm (159 lb-in).

    10. NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening the engine support insulator nuts or damage to the engine support insulator may occur.
    NOTE: The RH engine support insulator studs may come out of the insulator while removing the nuts. Install new RH engine support insulator studs if the studs come out.

  10. Remove and discard the 4 RH engine support insulator nuts.
    11. NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening the engine support insulator nuts or damage to the engine support insulator may occur.

  11. Remove and discard the 3 LH engine support insulator nuts.
    12. NOTE: The transmission insulator studs may come out of the insulator while removing the insulator-to-crossmember nuts. Install new transmission insulator studs if the studs come out.
  12. Remove the transmission support crossmember. For additional information, refer to FULL FRAME AND BODY MOUNTING .
  13. Remove and discard the transmission insulator bolts and remove the transmission insulator.

    14. NOTE: To prevent selector lever cable damage, do not apply force to the selector lever cable assembly between the manual control lever and the selector lever cable bracket.
  14. Remove the selector lever cable.
    1. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the manual control lever.
    2. Remove the selector lever cable bracket bolts and position the selector lever cable and bracket aside.

  15. Disconnect the transmission vehicle harness connector.

  16. Disconnect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor.

  17. Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) /intermediate shaft speed sensor.

  18. Disconnect the RH and LH wiring harness from the side of the transmission.
  19. Remove the flexplate inspection cover.
    1. Remove the flexplate inspection cover bolts.
    2. Remove the flexplate inspection cover.

  20. While holding the case fitting, remove the rear transmission fluid cooler tube.

  21. While holding the case fitting, remove the front transmission fluid cooler tube.

  22. Remove the cylinder block opening cover to gain access to the torque converter-to-flexplate nuts.

  23. Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to STARTING SYSTEM - GASOLINE ENGINES .
  24. Remove the steering damper-to-frame bolt and nut, and position the steering damper aside.

  25. Using a suitable tool, rotate the crankshaft pulley to gain access to the torque converter-to-flexplate nuts.

  26. Remove and discard the 6 torque converter-to-flexplate nuts.

  27. Remove the 7 transmission-to-engine mounting bolts.

  28. Slide the transmission back enough to install the Torque Converter Retainer.

  29. Carefully lower the transmission assembly.
  30. Remove and discard the transmission fluid filler tube O-ring.

  31. If the transmission is being overhauled or if installing a new or remanufactured transmission, carry out the TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER BACKFLUSHING AND CLEANING  procedure. For additional information, refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER BACKFLUSHING AND CLEANING.
  32. For vehicles equipped with a Power Take-Off (PTO) assembly, prior to installing the transmission, flush and clean the PTO assembly to remove any foreign material. Failure to remove foreign material from the PTO assembly may result in subsequent transmission concerns.
