Electronic Engine Controls

NOTE:
Do not use silicone based sprays or lubricants on any components installed onto or around the diesel exhaust system or intake air distribution and filtering system. Silicone reacts with the Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) sensor and may cause permanent damage to the NOx sensor.
The electronic engine controls consist of the following:
- Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor (located on the engine front cover, above the crank pulley)
- Charge Air Cooler Temperature (CACT) sensor (located on the Charge Air Cooler (CAC) outlet pipe)
- Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor (located on the left rear of the engine)
- Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) pressure sensor (mounted on the DPF)
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor - primary cooling system (located on the left side of the engine)
- ECT sensor - secondary cooling system ECT2 (located on the EGR cooler)
- Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) switch (located on the oil filter adapter)
- Engine Oil Temperature (EOT) sensor (located on the oil filter adapter)
- Exhaust Pressure (EP) sensor (located on the turbocharger RH inlet pipe)
- Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensor, (4 mounted in the exhaust system)
- Fuel pressure control valve (located on the rear of the LH fuel rail)
- Fuel pressure switch (located on the fuel supply tube)
- Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor (located on the front of the LH fuel rail)
- Fuel temperature sensor (located on the fuel supply tube)
- Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor (located on the top of the intake manifold)
- Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor (located on the air cleaner)
- Fuel volume control valve (located on the high pressure fuel pump)
- Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) sensor (located on the exhaust)
- NOx sensor module (located on the frame rail above the exhaust)
- PCM (located on the RH bulkhead)
- Turbocharger actuator (located on the turbocharger)

The Controller Area Network 2 (CAN2) is a communication network between the PCM, the NOx sensor module and the glow plug control module. The CAN2 is not wired to the Data Link Connector (DLC) and does not communicate data to a scan tool.
The glow plug control module receives messages over the CAN2 from the PCM to control when the glow plugs and the reductant heaters should be turned on.
The PCM receives the following messages over the CAN2:
- From the NOx sensor module:
- NOx and O2 concentrations levels
- NOx sensor and controller errors
- From the glow plug control module:
- Confirmations when the glow plugs and reductant heaters are on
- Fault messages for the glow plugs and reductant heaters
