Valve Cover RH: Removal

NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
NOTE: Installation of new spark plug seals or VCT solenoid seals is only required if seals are damaged.

  1. 1.

    With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .

  1. 2.

    Remove the engine appearance cover.

  1. 3.

    Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE .

  1. 4.

    Disconnect the battery positive cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .

  1. 5.

    Disconnect the turbocharger inlet tube hose.

  1. 6.

    Loosen the clamp at the turbocharger. Disconnect the turbocharger inlet tube from the grommet and remove the turbocharger inlet tube.

  1. 7.

    • Disconnect the turbocharger outlet tube hose.
    • Loosen the clamps. Disconnect the turbocharger outlet tube from the bracket grommet and remove the turbocharger outlet tube.

  1. 8.

    Remove the nuts and position aside the CAC tube bracket.

  1. 9.

    If equipped, disconnect the wiring at the valve cover.

  1. 10.

    Remove the RH ignition coil-on-plugs. Refer to: IGNITION COIL-ON-PLUG .

  1. 11.

    • Detach the retainers and position the vacuum hoses aside.

  1. 12.

    Disconnect the PCM electrical connector. Disconnect the electrical connector and the wire retainer. Position aside the engine wire harness.

  1. 13.

    Disconnect the VCT solenoid electrical connects and the wire retainers.

  1. 14.

    Disconnect the turbocharger vacuum hose and detach the vacuum hose retainer.

  1. 15.

    • Disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connectors.
    • Detach the wiring harness retainers.

    Remove the bolts and the CMP sensors.

  1. 17.

    NOTE: While removing the valve cover do not apply excessive force to the VCT oil control solenoid or damage may occur.
    NOTE: If the VCT oil control solenoid sticks to the VCT seal, carefully wiggle the valve cover until the bond breaks free or damage to the VCT seal and VCT oil control solenoid may occur.

    Loosen the stud bolts and remove the valve cover.

  1. 18.

    Remove and discard the valve cover gasket.

  1. 19.

    NOTE: Inspect the VCT solenoid seals. Remove any damaged seals.

    If necessary, using the special tools, remove the VCT solenoid seals. Use Special Service Tool: 205-142 (T80T-4000-J) Installer, Differential Bearing Cone., 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle.

  1. 20.

    NOTE: Inspect the spark plug tube seals. Remove any damaged seals.

    If necessary, using the special tools, remove the spark plug tube seals. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1247 VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Installer., 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle.

  1. 21.

    Clean the valve cover, cylinder head and engine front cover sealing surfaces with metal surface prep.
