4x2/4x4 

  1. 1.

    With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .

  1. 2.

    NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

    Index-mark the hood hinge location to aid in hood installation.

  1. 3.

    Remove the nuts and the hood.

  1. 4.

    Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .

  1. 5.

    Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .

  1. 6.

    Remove the following items:

    Disconnect the A/C pressure switch.

  1. 8.

    Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector and the wiring harness retainers.

    • Remove the nut and disconnect the A/C tube.
    • Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal.

  1. 10.

    Remove the nut and position the transmission cooler tube bracket and wiring harness aside.

    Disconnect the generator wiring from the engine front cover.

      Release the clamp and remove the upper radiator hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

      Release the clamp and position the heater hose aside. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  1. 13.

    1. 1.

      If equipped, release the clamp remove the oil cooler coolant hoses. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

    1. 2.

      Release the clamp and remove the lower radiator hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  1. 14.

    Remove the PCV tube.

    Remove the nut from the RH valve cover stud bolt and position the coolant hose aside.

    Remove the crankcase vent tube from LH valve cover.

    Remove the generator. Refer to: Generator - 3.5L Duratec (209kW/284PS) .

  1. 18.

    Detach the generator wiring harness retainer from the oil filter adapter.

  1. 19.

    Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to: Upper Intake Manifold .

  1. 20.

    Disconnect the fuel supply tube quick connect coupling from the fuel rail. Refer to: QUICK RELEASE COUPLING

  1. 21.

    Disconnect the heater hose from the lower intake manifold at the rear of the engine.

  1. 22.

    • Disconnect the PCM electrical connector and wiring harness retainer.
    • Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector.

4x4 

  1. 23.

    1. 1.

      Detach the transfer case wiring harness retainer from the PCM wiring harness.

    1. 2.

      Detach the PCM wiring harness retainer from the valve cover.

    1. 3.

      Detach the transfer case wiring harness retainer from the valve cover stud bolt.

  1. 24.

    Remove the bolt, retainer and the ground strap from the cowl.

  1. 25.

    Install Special Service Tool: 303-1245 Engine Lift Eye.

    • If equipped, remove the bolts.
    • Release the retainer and remove the transmission housing cover.

    • If equipped, remove the pin-type retainers.
    • Remove the bolts and the underbody shield.

    Remove the front driveshaft. Refer to: Front Driveshaft .

    Remove the starter motor. Refer to: STARTER MOTOR .

    Remove the wiring harness retainer from the oil pan.

    Remove the pin-type retainers and the access cover.

    NOTE: Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the engine clockwise.

    Remove and discard the torque converter nuts.

    Disconnect the LH HO2S and catalyst monitor sensors electrical connectors and detach wiring harness from the retainer.

    Detach the catalyst monitor sensor wiring harness retainer from the LH side of the transmission.

  1. 36.

    Disconnect the RH HO2S and catalyst monitor sensors electrical connectors and detach wiring harness from the retainer.

    Detach the transfer case wiring harness from the transmission wiring harness.

    Detach the transfer case vent tube retainer and position aside.

    1. 1.

      Rotate the transmission electrical connector.

    1. 2.

      Pull the transmission electrical connector out to disconnect.

    1. 3.

      Detach the wiring harness retainers and position the wiring harness aside.

    NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

    Remove and discard the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe bolts and separate.

    • Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment
    • Install the drain plug.

      Torque

      : 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)

  1. 45.

    NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the engine mount nuts, stud bolts or damage to the engine mount can occur.
    NOTE: The engine mount stud may come off with the nuts.
    • Remove and discard the RH engine mount nuts.
    • Remove the RH engine mount studs bolts.

    NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening or tightening the engine mount through bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket can occur.

    Remove and discard the LH engine mount through bolt.

    Remove the transmission-to-engine bolts.

    NOTE: Do not support the transmission by the fluid pan, failure to follow this instruction may result in serious damage to the transmission.

    Support the bellhousing of the transmission with a suitable floor jack and a block of wood. Use the General Equipment: Trolley Jack Use the General Equipment: Wooden Block

  1. 52.

    Remove the LH transmission-to-engine bolt.

    Install a chain to the engine lift eyes.

    NOTE: After removing the bolts leave the LH engine mount in place.

    Remove and discard the bolts for the LH engine mount.

    NOTE: It may be necessary to install a ratchet strap from the front of engine to the chain to keep the engine level.

    Using the floor crane and chain, raise the engine for clearance to remove the LH engine mount. Use the General Equipment: Floor Crane

    Remove the LH engine mount.

    Detach the generator wiring harness retainer from the lower LH side of the engine block.
