  1. 1.

    With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .

  1. 2.

    Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE

  1. 3.

    Using a holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.

  1. 4.

    Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .

  1. 5.

    Remove the front wheels and tires. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .

  1. 6.

    If equipped, remove the bolts and the skid plate.

  1. 7.

    If equipped, remove the fasteners and the underbody shield.

    If equipped, remove the bolts and the skid plate.

    Remove the RH and LH fender splash shields. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .

  1. 11.

    Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to: COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING AND VACUUM FILLING .

    NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

    Index-mark the hood hinge location to aid in hood installation.

  1. 13.

    Remove the nuts and the hood.

    Remove the following items:

    Disconnect the A/C pressure transducer electrical connector.

    Remove the nut and disconnect the A/C tube.
    • Discard the O-ring seal and gasket.

  1. 17.

    Rotate the retaining ring counterclockwise 180 degrees and remove the TC bypass tube.

      Remove the nuts.

    1. 2.

      Slide the engine appearance cover out of the retaining bracket.
    • If the engine appearance cover stud bolts are loosened or removed, they must be installed/tightened into the intake manifold.

      Torque

      : 62 lb.in (7 Nm)

  1. 19.

    Remove the following items:

    Release the clamps and remove the coolant hoses.

    Disconnect the PCV tube quick release couplings and remove the tube. Refer to: QUICK RELEASE COUPLING

    Disconnect the quick release coupling and remove the EVAP tube assembly. Refer to: QUICK RELEASE COUPLING .

      Disconnect the crankcase pressure sensor electrical connector.

    1. 2.

      Disconnect the PCV tube quick release coupling. Refer to: QUICK RELEASE COUPLING .

      Disconnect the vacuum tubes.

    1. 2.

      Disconnect the quick release couplings and remove the vacuum tube assembly. Refer to: QUICK RELEASE COUPLING .

    Remove the nuts, the wiring ground terminals and detach the wiring harness retainer.

    If equipped, detach 4x4 wiring harness retainer from the rear RH valve cover stud bolt.

    Disconnect the heater core inlet and outlet hoses.

      Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connectors.

      Remove the bolt and position the vacuum harness pressure sensor aside.

      Remove the bolt and the MAP sensor.

    NOTE: When removing or installing the high-pressure fuel pump noise insulator, spreading the openings will reduce the risk of damage.

    Remove the high-pressure fuel pump noise insulator.

  1. 31.

    Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump fuel feed tube quick release coupling. Refer to: QUICK RELEASE COUPLING

    Disconnect the EVAP tube quick release coupling. Refer to: QUICK RELEASE COUPLING .

  1. 33.

    NOTE: Use a shop towel when removing the oil filter housing to prevent oil from spilling on the engine or accessory drive belt.

    1. 1.

      Loosen the oil filter housing and allow the oil to drain out of the housing and down into the engine.

    1. 2.

      Remove the oil filter housing and discard the oil filter element.

    1. 3.

      Remove and discard the O-ring seals.

  1. 34.

    Remove the nuts and the A/C tubes.
    • Discard the O-ring seals and gaskets.

    • Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
    • Detach the wiring harness connectors.

    • Disconnect the generator electrical connector.
    • Lift the protective cover, remove the nut and position the harness aside.

  1. 37.

    WARNING: Do not reuse steering column shaft bolts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column shaft detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

    1. 1.

      Remove and discard the steering column shaft bolt.

    1. 2.

      Separate the steering column shaft u-joint from the steering gear.

    Detach the wiring harness retainer located below the generator from the cylinder block.

      Remove the wiring harness retainer nut.

    1. 2.

      Remove the pin-type retainer.

    NOTE: The drain plug should be removed and installed by hand, do not use tools.

      Turn the oil drain plug by hand counterclockwise 120 degrees. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

    1. 2.

      Pull the oil drain plug out of the oil pan.

    1. 3.

      After the oil has drained, push the oil drain plug into the oil pan.

    1. 4.

      NOTE: Overtightening will damage the oil drain plug and possibly the oil pan.

      Turn the oil drain plug by hand clockwise 120 degrees.

      Remove the pin-type retainer.

      Remove the bolt and ground wire.

    NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

    Remove and discard the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe bolts and separate.

    NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

    Position the catalytic converters back.

    • Remove and discard the exhaust gaskets.

    Disconnect theLH catalyst monitor sensor and HO2S electrical connectors.

    If equipped, detach the 4x4 wiring harness retainers and position the harness aside.

    NOTE: Do not pull on the wire harness to disconnect the electrical connector or damage to the electrical connector will occur.

      Rotate the transmission electrical connector counterclockwise.

    1. 2.

      Pull the transmission electrical connector out to disconnect.

    1. 3.

      Disconnect the transmission fluid auxiliary pump electrical connector.

    1. 4.

      Detach the retainers and position the wiring harness aside.

    Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube bracket nut.

      Remove and discard the transmission fluid cooler tube bracket stud bolt.

      Release the retainer and position aside the transmission cooler fluid cooler tubes.

    NOTE: Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the engine clockwise.

    Remove and discard the torque converter nuts.

    Loosen the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.

    Remove and discard the LH engine mount through bolt.

    NOTE: Do not support the transmission by the fluid pan, failure to follow this instruction may result in serious damage to the transmission.

    Support the bellhousing of the transmission with a suitable floor jack and a block of wood. Use the General Equipment: Trolley Jack Use the General Equipment: Wooden Block

  1. 65.

    Install Special Service Tool: 303-1634 Lift Eyes (2)., 303-1246 Engine Spreader Bar.

    Install a floor crane and a length of chain with connecting links. Use the General Equipment: Floor Crane

    NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing or installing the engine mount-to-frame bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-frame nut plate can occur.

    Remove and discard the engine mount-to-frame bolts.

    NOTE: It will be necessary to adjust the height floor jack to support the transmission.

    Using the floor crane raise the engine assembly and position the engine to the RH side of the vehicle. Use the General Equipment: Floor Crane
