Removal and Installation

NOTE: Allow the engine to cool before removing the coolant expansion tank. The radiator draws coolant from the coolant expansion tank as the engine cools. If the coolant expansion tank is removed before the engine cools, the radiator will draw air into the system, resulting in possible engine damage.

NOTE: During normal vehicle operation, Motorcraft® Specialty Orange Engine Coolant may change color from orange to pink or light red. As long as the engine coolant is clear and uncontaminated, this color change does not indicate the engine coolant has degraded nor does it require the engine coolant to be drained, the system to be flushed, or the engine coolant to be replaced.

Using a suitable suction device, siphon the coolant from the coolant expansion tank.
Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) element. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING .
Disconnect the coolant overflow hose from the radiator.
Remove the 2 bolts and the coolant expansion tank/lower ACL housing assembly.
- To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Fill the coolant expansion tank with a 50/50 mixture of coolant and distilled water.
