Chart 1

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 28 other vehicles, including the 2014 Lincoln Navigator, 2014 Lincoln MKZ, 2014 Lincoln MKX, 2014 Lincoln MKT, and 2014 Lincoln MKS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For some vehicle applications, the engine may stall if left running while refueling. Advise the customer to turn the engine off while refueling to avoid contamination or damage to the evaporative emission (EVAP) system.
SYSTEM/COMPONENT REFERENCE (Section 5 Pinpoint Test unless noted)
Check the following parameter identifiers (PIDs):
  • DPFEGR (if equipped) (hot idle value within 0.15 volt of the ignition ON, engine OFF value)
  • LONGFT1 or LONGFT2 (value between -20 and +20%)
  • VPWR (value between 10.5 and 17.0 volts, and within 0.5 volt of battery voltage)
DPFEGR PID value not within 0.15 volt of ignition ON, engine OFF value:
GO to PINPOINT TEST HH: EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION SYSTEM MODULE (ESM) .
LONGFT1 or LONGFT2 value low (-):
Continue diagnosis. Concentrate checks in areas that would cause the engine to run rich.
LONGFT1 or LONGFT2 value high (+):
Continue diagnosis. Concentrate checks in areas that would cause the engine to run lean.
VPWR not between 10.5 and 17.0 volts:
REFER to the appropriate service information article, Charging System and CARRY OUT the Inspection and Verification to continue diagnosis.
VPWR between 10.5 and 17.0 volts, but not within 0.5 volt of battery voltage:
CHECK the B+ voltage to the powertrain control module (PCM) power relay. CHECK the VPWR circuit between the PCM and the PCM power relay. CHECK the PWR GND circuits.
Fuel Injection System For vehicles that run rough at idle check the INJx_F PIDs (the x indicates the injector number) with the ignition ON, engine running. There is 1 INJx_F PID for each engine cylinder. All INJx_F PIDs must indicate NO FAULT. The INJx_F PIDs indicate a fault (an injector circuit concern is indicated). For Edge 2.0L, Escape 1.6L, Escape 2.0L, Explorer 2.0L, Explorer 3.5L GTDI, F-150 3.5L, Fiesta 1.0L, Fiesta 1.6L GTDI, Flex 3.5L GTDI, Focus, Fusion 1.5L, Fusion 1.6L, Fusion 2.0L, MKS 3.5L, MKT 2.0L, MKT 3.5L, MKZ 2.0L, Taurus 2.0L, Taurus 3.5L GTDI and Transit Connect 1.6L, GO to PINPOINT TEST DI: DIRECT FUEL INJECTION FUEL INJECTOR . For all others, GO to PINPOINT TEST KG: FUEL INJECTOR .
Mass Airflow (MAF) Sensor GO to PINPOINT TEST DC: MASS AIRFLOW (MAF) SENSOR .
Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor For Explorer 3.5L GTDI, F-150 3.5L, Flex 3.5L GTDI, MKS 3.5L, MKT 3.5L and Taurus 3.5L GTDI, GO to PINPOINT TEST DN: PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE SENSORS .
For all others, GO to PINPOINT TEST DM: MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE (MAP) SENSOR .
Secondary Ignition System For Fiesta 1.6L TIVCT, GO to PINPOINT TEST JC: SECONDARY IGNITION (COIL PACK) .
For all others, GO to PINPOINT TEST JB: SECONDARY IGNITION (COP) .
Fuel Delivery System GO to PINPOINT TEST HC: FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM .
Exhaust System GO to PINPOINT TEST HF: CATALYST EFFICIENCY MONITOR AND EXHAUST SYSTEMS .
Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) System GO to PINPOINT TEST HG: POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION (PCV) SYSTEM .
EVAP System GO to PINPOINT TEST HX: EVAPORATIVE EMISSION (EVAP) SYSTEM AND MONITOR .
Charging System REFER to the appropriate service information article, Charging System and CARRY OUT the Inspection and Verification to continue diagnosis.
Universal Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) GO to PINPOINT TEST DZ: UNIVERSAL HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (HO2S) .
Automatic Transmission REFER to the appropriate service information article, Automatic Transmission, Diagnosis By Symptom to continue diagnosis.
Base Engine REFER to the appropriate service information article, Engine System and CARRY OUT the Inspection and Verification to continue diagnosis.
Intake Air System GO to PINPOINT TEST HU: INTAKE AIR SYSTEMS .
Auto Stop Start System GO to PINPOINT TEST AA: AUTO STOP START .
Additional Testing GO to PINPOINT TEST Z: INTERMITTENT .
Additional Checks:
  • Some vehicles have a TQ_CNTRL PID available. Check this PID to determine if the PCM is reducing torque. The TQ_CNTRL PID may indicate which component or system, if any, is requesting a torque reduction.
  • Correct PCM vehicle identification (VID) block information. Refer to FLASH ELECTRICALLY ERASABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY (EEPROM) to carry out the Making Changes to the VID Block procedure.
  • Be aware of engine RPM/speed limiting functions of the PCM (look for incorrect high vehicle speed signal from ABS, VSS, or OSS).
  • Drivelines
  • Manual transmission or clutch
  • Charging system
  • Traction control system (if equipped)
  • A/C system (for surge with A/C on)
  • Cruise control system (for surge with cruise control on)
REFER to the applicable service information article.
Brake Over Accelerator CHECK for simultaneous brake pedal and accelerator pedal operation inadvertently activating the brake over accelerator feature. CHECK the BRKOVR_ACTION, BRKOVRD_POSS, and DIST_BRKOVRD PIDs for recent simultaneous brake pedal and accelerator pedal operation. ADVISE the customer that simultaneous brake pedal and accelerator pedal operation by the vehicle operator activates the brake over accelerator feature. REFER to POWERTRAIN CONTROL SOFTWARE for additional information.
