Pinpoint Test E: The Steering Wheel Switch Illumination Is Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2013 Ford Mustang. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. E1 CHECK THE OTHER DIMMABLE LIGHTING SWITCHES
    • Ignition ON.
    • Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
    • Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the full illumination position and observe the other dimmable switches.
    • Are all the dimmable switches inoperative?
  2. E2 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE CLOCKSPRING
    • Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
    • DEPOWER the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
    • Disconnect: Clockspring C2274A.
    • Connect: Negative Battery Cable.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
    • Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the full illumination position.
    • Measure the voltage between the clockspring C2274A-16, circuit VLN04 (VT/GY), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
    • Yes  : GO to E3.
    • No  : REPAIR circuit VLN04 (VT/GY) for an open. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM . TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. E3 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE CLOCKSPRING USING THE CONNECTOR GROUND
    • Measure the voltage between the clockspring C2274A-16, circuit VLN04 (VT/GY), harness side and the clockspring C2274A-5, circuit GD116 (BK/VT), harness side.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
    • Yes  : GO to E4.
    • No  : REPAIR circuit GD116 (BK/VT). REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM . TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. E4 CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Remove the driver air bag module. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
    • Disconnect: C2274B.
    • Measure the resistance between the lower clockspring, component side pin 5 and the upper clockspring, component side pin 4.

    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
  5. E5 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE INOPERATIVE STEERING WHEEL ILLUMINATION SOURCE USING THE CONNECTOR GROUND
    • Connect: Clockspring C2274A.
    • Connect: Clockspring C2274B.
    • Disconnect: Steering Wheel Switch C2298 (LH) or C2999 (RH).
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure the voltage between C2298-8 and C2298-6 (LH) or C2999-8 and C2999-6 (RH).
