Transmission - 2.7L EcoBoost (238kW/324PS): Removal

  1. 1.

    With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .

  1. 2.

    Remove the starter motor assembly. Refer to: STARTER MOTOR .

  1. 3.

    Remove the rear driveshaft assembly. Refer to: Rear Driveshaft .

Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles 

  1. 4.

    Remove the front driveshaft assembly. Refer to: Front Driveshaft .

Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) 

  1. 5.

    Remove and discard the stabilizer bar bracket nuts and allow the stabilizer bar to swing downward.

All vehicles 

  1. 6.

    NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.

    Remove the bolts and the transmission fluid pan and allow the transmission fluid to drain.

  1. 7.

    NOTE: It is not necessary to torque transmission fluid pan bolts at this time.

    Install the transmission fluid pan and the bolts.

  1. 8.

    NOTE: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety strap.
    NOTE: Make sure the transmission jack makes contact on the outer ribs of the transmission fluid pan.

    Using a high-lift transmission jack, support the transmission.

    Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

  1. 9.

    Remove the LH catalytic converter. Refer to: CATALYTIC CONVERTER LH .

  1. 10.

    Remove the transmission support insulator. Refer to: Transmission Support Insulator .

  1. 11.

    Disconnect the HO2S electrical connector.

  1. 12.

    Disconnect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.

  1. 13.

    Remove the bolts from the catalytic converter flange to the muffler inlet pipe.

  1. 14.

    NOTE: Clean all exhaust connections before reassembly.

    Remove and discard the catalytic converter nuts and remove the catalytic converter. Discard the gasket.

  1. 15.

    If equipped, remove the nut and the selector lever cable splash shield.

  1. 16.

    1. 1.

      Remove and discard the transmission fluid cooler tube bracket bolt.

    1. 2.

      Release the retainer and position aside the transmission cooler fluid cooler tubes.

  1. 17.

    NOTE: To prevent selector lever cable damage, do not apply force to the selector lever cable between the manual control lever and the selector lever cable bracket.

    1. 1.

      Remove the selector lever cable bolt.

    1. 2.

      Move the locking tab up and disconnect the selector lever cable end from the manual control lever.

    1. 3.

      Disconnect the selector lever cable from the bracket and position aside.

    NOTE: Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) shown in illustration, Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) similar.

    Remove the fuel line bracket bolt.

Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles 

  1. 19.

    Disconnect the transfer case vent tube.

    Disconnect the transfer case electrical connector.

All vehicles 

  1. 21.

    NOTE: Do not pull on the wire harness to disconnect the electrical connector or damage to the electrical connector will occur.

    1. 1.

      Rotate the transmission electrical connector counterclockwise.

    1. 2.

      Pull the transmission electrical connector out to disconnect.

    1. 3.

      Disconnect the transmission fluid auxiliary pump electrical connector.

    1. 4.

      Detach the retainers and position the wiring harness aside.

  1. 22.

    Remove the retainers and the access cover.

    NOTE: Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the engine clockwise.

      Index mark one stud and the flexplate for assembly reference.

    1. 2.

      Remove and discard the torque converter nuts.

    Remove the lower bellhousing bolt.

    Remove the RH side bellhousing bolts.

    Remove the top bellhousing bolts and position aside the bracket.

    Remove the LH bellhousing bolts and the selector lever cable bracket.

  1. 28.

    Slide the transmission back enough to install the special tool.

    Use Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles 

  1. 29.

    Using the high-lift transmission jack, remove the transmission from the vehicle.

    Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles 

  1. 30.

    1. 1.

      Make sure the transmission is securely fastened to the transmission jack.

    1. 2.

      Slide the transmission towards the rear of the vehicle.

    1. 3.

      Tilt the front of the transmission down.

    1. 4.

      Remove the transmission from the vehicle.

  1. 31.

    If the transmission is to be overhauled or if installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, remove and discard the bolts and separate the transfer case from the transmission.

  1. 32.

    If installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, remove and discard the bolts.

  1. 33.

    NOTE: Failure to clean the transmission fluid cooler tubes can result in transmission failure.

    If the transmission is to be overhauled or if installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, carryout the Transmission Fluid Cooler Backflushing and Cleaning procedure. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Cooler - Backflushing and Cleaning .
