Test Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 28 other vehicles, including the 2014 Lincoln Navigator, 2014 Lincoln MKZ, 2014 Lincoln MKX, 2014 Lincoln MKT, and 2014 Lincoln MKS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. KP1 CHECK FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) 

    Are DTCs P00DF, P00E0, P00E1, P00E2, P023A, P023B, P023C, P026A or P1229 present? 

    Yes No
    For DTC P00DF, P00E0, P00E1, P00E2, GO to  KP13.
    For DTC P1229, GO to KP2  .
    For all others, GO to  KP20.
    GO to  KP7.
  2. KP2 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE CAC PUMP RELAY COIL 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • CAC Relay connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) CAC Relay Connector, Harness Side (-)
      VPWR - Pin 1 Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 10.5 V? 

    Yes No
    GO to KP3  . REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  3. KP3 CHECK THE CAC PUMP RELAY 
    • Carry out the CAC pump relay component test. Refer to the OEM WIRING DIAGRAMS COMPONENT TESTING article for component testing procedures.

    Does the CAC pump relay pass the component test? 

    Yes No
    GO to KP4  . INSTALL a new CAC relay. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  4. KP4 CHECK FOR AN OPEN CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE PCM AND THE CAC RELAY 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) PCM Connector, Harness Side (-) CAC Relay Connector, Harness Side
      CAC CAC - Pin 2

    Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to KP5  . REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. KP5 CHECK FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE BETWEEN THE PCM AND THE CAC RELAY 
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) PCM Connector, Harness Side (-) Vehicle Battery
      CAC Negative terminal

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes No
    REPAIR the short circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. GO to KP6  .
  6. KP6 CHECK BETWEEN THE PCM AND THE CAC RELAY FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) PCM Connector, Harness Side (-) Vehicle Battery
      CAC Negative terminal

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to KP7  . REPAIR the short circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  7. KP7 CHECK THE CAC FOR MECHANICAL OPERATION 
    NOTE: Remove the fan control relays to disable the cooling fans so the pump can be heard. Disregard the cooling fan DTCs that will set as a result of this step.
    • CAC Relay connector connected.
    • PCM connector connected.
    • Carry out the PCM KOEO self-test.
    • Observe the CAC pump.

    Does the CAC pump cycle ON and OFF? 

    Yes No
    CHECK for low fluid level in the CAC system. CHECK for cracked or incorrectly routed CAC lines or airflow blockage at the CAC radiator. REPAIR the system as necessary. If the symptom still exists, RETURN to NO DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) PRESENT SYMPTOM CHART INDEX , to diagnose boost gauge indicates higher than normal boost. GO to KP8  .
  8. KP8 CHECK THE VOLTAGE AND GROUND CIRCUITS AT THE CAC PUMP 
    • Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Pump connector disconnected.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Pump Connector, Harness Side (-) Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Pump Connector, Harness Side
      PUMPPWR GND
    • Carry out the PCM KOEO self-test.

    Does the voltage cycle to greater than 10.5 V? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Pump. REFER to the applicable service information article, Supercharger Cooling.
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    GO to KP9  .
  9. KP9 CHECK THE CAC VOLTAGE CIRCUIT TO GND 
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Pump Connector, Harness Side (-) Vehicle Battery
      PUMPPWR Negative terminal

    Is the voltage greater than 10.5 V? 

    Yes No
    GO to KP10  . REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  10. KP10 CHECK THE INTEGRITY OF THE CAC PUMP GROUND CONNECTION 
    • Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Pump connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Pump Connector, Harness Side (-) Vehicle Battery
      GND Negative terminal

    Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to KP11  . REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  11. KP11 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE CAC PUMP RELAY 
    • CAC Relay connector disconnected.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) CAC Relay Connector, Harness Side (-)
      B+ - Pin 3 Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 10.5 V? 

    Yes No
    GO to KP12  . REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  12. KP12 CHECK FOR AN OPEN CAC PUMP CIRCUIT 
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) CAC Relay Connector, Harness Side (-) Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Pump Connector, Harness Side
      PUMPPWR - Pin 5 PUMPPWR

    Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new CAC pump relay.
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  13. KP13 CHECK THE CAC COOLING SYSTEM 
    WARNING: TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY DO NOT UNSCREW THE COOLANT PRESSURE RELIEF CAP WHILE THE ENGINE IS OPERATING OR HOT. THE COOLING SYSTEM IS UNDER PRESSURE. STEAM AND HOT LIQUID CAN COME OUT FORCEFULLY WHEN THE CAP IS LOOSENED SLIGHTLY. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
    NOTE: Verify cooling fan operation before proceeding with this test.
    • Check the CAC cooling system for any loss of coolant or overheating concerns.

    Is the CAC cooling system OK? 

    Yes No
    GO to KP14  . REFER to the applicable service information article, Charge Air Cooling, to continue CAC cooling system diagnosis.
  14. KP14 CHECK THE RESISTANCE OF THE CAC COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR 
    NOTE: Refer to the chart at the beginning of this test for the resistance specifications.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Coolant Temperature Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Coolant Temperature Sensor Connector, Component Side (-) Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Coolant Temperature Sensor Connector, Component Side
      CACCTS - Pin 1 SIGRTN - Pin 2

    Is the resistance within specification? 

    Yes No
    GO to KP15  . INSTALL a new Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Coolant Temperature sensor.
    REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article. RESET the keep alive memory (KAM), REFER to RESETTING THE KEEP ALIVE MEMORY (KAM) .
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  15. KP15 CHECK THE CAC COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN 
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Coolant Temperature Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      CACCTS - Pin 1 CACCTS
      SIGRTN - Pin 2 SIGRTN

    Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to KP16  . REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  16. KP16 CHECK THE CAC COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Coolant Temperature Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CACCTS - Pin 1 Ground
      SIGRTN - Pin 2 Ground

    Are the resistances greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to KP17  . REPAIR the short circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  17. KP17 CHECK THE CAC COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Coolant Temperature Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CACCTS - Pin 1 Ground
      SIGRTN - Pin 2 Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes No
    REPAIR the short circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. GO to KP18  .
  18. KP18 CAC COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR INTERMITTENT CHECK 
    • Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Coolant Temperature Sensor connector connected.
    • PCM connector connected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the CACCT_V (VOLT) PID.
    • While observing the PID, wiggle, shake, and bend small sections of the wiring harness while working from the sensor to the PCM.
    • Lightly tap on the CAC coolant temperature sensor and wiggle the harness and connector to simulate road shock.

    Does the PID reading change? 

    Yes No
    REPAIR as necessary or INSTALL a new CAC coolant temperature sensor. REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article. RESET the keep alive memory (KAM), REFER to RESETTING THE KEEP ALIVE MEMORY (KAM) . GO to KP19  .
  19. KP19 CHECK THE CHARGE AIR COOLER COOLANT TEMPERATURE AND THE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE CORRELATION 
    NOTE: Check temperature values while engine is at ambient temperature, cold soak the engine for a minimum of 6 hours if necessary. Make sure the vehicle has not been in direct sun light.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the CACCT (TEMP) and ECT (TEMP) PIDs.

    Are the temperature readings within 16.6°C (30°F) of each other? 

    Yes No
    GO to  KP25. INSTALL a new Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Coolant Temperature sensor.
    REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article. RESET the keep alive memory (KAM). REFER to RESETTING THE KEEP ALIVE MEMORY (KAM) .
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  20. KP20 CHECK THE PUMPPWR CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Pump connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Pump Connector, Harness Side (-)
      PUMPPWR Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 10.5 V? 

    Yes No
    GO to KP21  . REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  21. KP21 CHECK THE GND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Pump Connector, Harness Side (-)
      GND Ground

    Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to KP22  . REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  22. KP22 CHECK THE CAC CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Pump Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      CAC CAC

    Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to KP23  . REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  23. KP23 CHECK THE CAC CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Pump Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CAC Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to KP24  . REPAIR the short circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  24. KP24 CHECK THE CAC CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Pump Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CAC Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes No
    REPAIR the short circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. INSTALL a new Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Pump. REFER to the applicable service information article, Charge Air Cooling.
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  25. KP25 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Visually inspect for:
      • pushed out pins
      • corrosion
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Carry out the PCM self-test.
    • Verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to FLASH ELECTRICALLY ERASABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY (EEPROM) , Programming the VID Block for a Replacement PCM. The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
    GO to PINPOINT TEST Z .
