Cylinder Head: Removal

NOTE:
During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.
- 1.
With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. REFER to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- 2.
Drain the cooling system. REFER to: Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding . REFER to: COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING .
- 3.
Remove the following items:- Remove the fuel injectors. REFER to: Fuel Injector .
- Remove the HO2S. REFER to: Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) .
- 6.
Remove the bolts, and position aside the catalyst monitor sensor wiring harness and remove the exhaust manifold heat shield.
- 10.NOTE: Discard the nuts and catalytic converter gasket.
Remove and discard the nuts, and position aside the manifold.
- 12.
Remove the camshaft. REFER to: Camshaft .

Using a floor jack and a wooden block support the engine.Use the General Equipment: Trolley Jack

- 17.
Disconnect the coolant hoses from the coolant outlet, and disconnect the ECT sensor electrical connector.Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- 18.NOTE: If the valve tappets are to be reused, mark the location of the valve tappets to make sure they are assembled in their original positions.
Remove the valve tappets.
