Removal And Installation: Camshaft: Removal
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2015 Ford Focus. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.
NOTE:
Do not rotate the camshafts unless instructed to in this procedure. Rotating the camshafts or crankshaft with timing components loosened or removed can cause serious damage to the valves and pistons.
NOTE:
Failure to position the No. 1 piston at TDC can result in damage to the engine. Turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation only.
NOTE:
The Camshaft Alignment Tool is for camshaft alignment only. Using this tool to prevent engine rotation can result in engine damage.
NOTE:
The Crankshaft TDC Timing Peg will contact the crankshaft and prevent it from turning past TDC. However, the crankshaft can still be rotated in the counterclockwise direction. The crankshaft must remain at the TDC position during the camshaft removal and installation
- 1.
With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. REFER to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- 2.
Check the valve clearance. REFER to: Valve Clearance Check .
- 3.
Remove the variable valve timing unit. REFER to: Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Unit .
- 4.NOTE: The Camshaft Alignment Tool is for camshaft alignment only. Using this tool to prevent engine rotation can result in engine damage.
Remove Special Service Tool: 303-1565 Alignment Tool, Camshaft.
- 6.NOTE: Do not mark the camshaft lobe surface. If any material is applied to the camshaft lobe surface, the lobe must be cleaned with Motorcraft Metal Surface Prep.
Depending on the camshaft being serviced, mark the camshaft lobe orientation onto the camshaft bearing cap.
NOTE:
Exhaust Camshaft
- 7.NOTE: Failure to follow the camshaft bearing cap loosening procedure can result in damage to the camshafts.NOTE: Mark the location and orientation of each camshaft bearing cap.
If servicing the exhaust camshaft, remove the camshaft bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown in illustration and remove the exhaust camshaft.
NOTE:
Intake Camshaft
- 8.NOTE: Failure to follow the camshaft bearing cap loosening procedure can result in damage to the camshafts.NOTE: Mark the location and orientation of each camshaft bearing cap.
If servicing the intake camshaft, remove the camshaft bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown and remove the intake camshaft.
