Pinpoint Test C: The Steering Wheel Switch(Es) Illumination Is Inoperative

  1. C1 CHECK THE OTHER DIMMABLE ILLUMINATION SOURCES 
    • Ignition ON.
    • Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
    • Place a shop light above the instrument panel ambient light sensor to make sure that the BCM  outputs maximum illumination voltage.
    • Press and hold the instrument panel dimmer switch up to the full illumination position.

    Are all the dimmable steering wheel switches inoperative? 

    1. Yes  : GO to C2 
    2. No  : For the LH  lower switch, GO to  C6

      For the RH  lower switch, GO to  C7

      For the LH  and/or RH  upper switch, GO to  C8

  2. C2 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE STEERING WHEEL SWITCHES 
    • Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
    • Disconnect: SASM C226A.
    • Disconnect: Clockspring C218A.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
    • Press and hold the instrument panel dimmer switch up to the full illumination position.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C226A-12  VOLTAGE C218A-4 

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    1. Yes  : GO to  C4
    2. No  : GO to C3 
  3. C3 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR MODULE (SASM) 
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C226A-12  VOLTAGE Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    1. Yes  : REPAIR the ground circuit.
    2. No  : REPAIR the illumination circuit.
  4. C4 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE STEERING WHEEL HARNESS 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Connect: SASM C226A.
    • Connect: Clockspring C218A.
    • Ignition OFF and wait one minute.
    • Remove the driver air bag module.

      REFER to: DRIVER AIRBAG

    • Disconnect: Clockspring C218B.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C218B (Component side) Pin 7 VOLTAGE C218B (Component side) Pin 10

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    1. Yes  : CONNECT Clockspring C218B.

      For vehicles equipped with a LH  lower switch only, GO to  C6

      For vehicles with multiple steering wheel switches, INSTALL a new steering wheel.

      REFER to: STEERING WHEEL

    2. No  : GO to C5 
  5. C5 CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Remove the clockspring.

      REFER to: CLOCKSPRING

    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C218B (Component side) Pin 10 OHM C218A (Component side) Pin 4
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C218B (Component side) Pin 7 OHM C218C (Component side) Pin 7

    Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 

    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new SASM.

      REFER to: STEERING ANGLE SENSOR MODULE (SASM)

    2. No  : INSTALL a new clockspring.

      REFER to: CLOCKSPRING

  6. C6 CHECK THE LEFT HAND (LH) LOWER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: LH  Lower Steering Wheel Switch.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2366-1  VOLTAGE C2366-5 

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new steering wheel switch.

      REFER to: STEERING WHEEL MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH

    2. No  : INSTALL a new steering wheel.

      REFER to: STEERING WHEEL

  7. C7 CHECK THE RIGHT HAND (RH) LOWER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: RH  Lower Steering Wheel Switch.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2367-1  VOLTAGE C2367-4 

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new steering wheel switch.

      REFER to: STEERING WHEEL MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH

    2. No  : INSTALL a new steering wheel.

      REFER to: STEERING WHEEL

  8. C8 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE UPPER (AIR BAG) HARNESS 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Ignition OFF and wait one minute.
    • Remove the driver air bag module.

      REFER to: DRIVER AIRBAG

    • Disconnect: Inline C260.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C260-3  (Male side) VOLTAGE C260-2  (Male side)

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    1. Yes  : For the LH  upper switch, GO to C9 

      For the RH  upper switch, GO to  C10

    2. No  : INSTALL a new steering wheel.

      REFER to: STEERING WHEEL

  9. C9 CHECK THE LEFT HAND (LH) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Connect: Inline C260.
    • Disconnect: LH  Upper Steering Wheel Switch.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2998-1  VOLTAGE C2998-2 

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new steering wheel switch.

      REFER to: STEERING WHEEL MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH

    2. No  : INSTALL a new driver air bag module.

      REFER to: DRIVER AIRBAG

  10. C10 CHECK THE RIGHT HAND (RH) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Connect: Inline C260.
    • Disconnect: RH  Upper Steering Wheel Switch.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C2999-2  VOLTAGE C2999-3 

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new steering wheel switch.

      REFER to: STEERING WHEEL MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH

    2. No  : INSTALL a new driver air bag module.

      REFER to: DRIVER AIRBAG
