Pinpoint Test
NOTE:
Access to the defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator motor connector in this pinpoint test is difficult. Before disconnecting the defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator motor connector, visually inspect the actuator and its harness for obvious damage. If no damage is evident, proceed with the test.
- CHECK THE HVAC MODULE FOR DTCs
- CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR OPERATION USING ACTIVE COMMANDS
- Ignition ON.
- Using a scan tool, view HVAC module PIDs .
- Monitor the HVAC module PID AIR_MODE_DPOS.
- Select panel mode.
- Select the highest blower motor setting.
- Observe airflow while using the scan tool to operate the HVAC module active command AIR_MODE_DPOS, increasing and decreasing the percentage value.
Does the airflow change between the defrost, panel and floor outlets when the active command is changed?
- Yes
: INSTALL a new FCIM.
REFER to FRONT CONTROLS INTERFACE MODULE (FCIM) - (Premium),
REFER to FRONT CONTROLS INTERFACE MODULE (FCIM) - (Premium Plus), or
REFER to FRONT CONTROLS INTERFACE MODULE (FCIM) - (Sony® Sound).
- No : INSPECT for broken linkage or door. REPAIR as necessary. If no condition is found, GO to 14.
- Yes
: INSTALL a new FCIM.
- CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: HVAC Module C228A.
- Disconnect: Defrost/Panel/Floor Mode Door Actuator.
- Measure:
HVAC Module Ground C228A Ground Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 6 CH228 (YE/GY) - Ground 7 CH229 (WH/BU) - Ground Are the resistances greater than 10, 000 ohms?
- Yes: GO to 5.
- No : REPAIR the circuit in question.
- CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: HVAC Module C228A.
- Disconnect: Defrost/Panel/Floor Mode Door Actuator.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure:
HVAC Module Ground C228A Ground Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 6 CH228 (YE/GY) - Ground 7 CH229 (WH/BU) - Ground Is any voltage present?
- Yes: REPAIR the circuit in question.
- No : GO to 5 .
- CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Defrost/Panel/Floor Mode Door Actuator.
- Measure:
HVAC Module HVAC Module C228A C228A Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 6 CH228 (YE/GY) 7 CH229 (WH/BU) Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
- Yes: GO to 14.
- No : REPAIR the circuits.
- CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: HVAC Module C228A.
- Disconnect: Defrost/Panel/Floor Mode Door Actuator.
- Measure:
HVAC Module Defrost/Panel/Floor Mode Door Actuator C228A C236 Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 6 CH228 (YE/GY) 6 CH228 (YE/GY) 7 CH229 (WH/BU) 1 CH229 (WH/BU) Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
- Yes: GO to 14.
- No : REPAIR the circuit in question.
- CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- CHECK THE SIGNAL RETURN CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT
- Measure:
HVAC Module HVAC Module C228A C228A Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 21 VH436 (YE/VT) 23 RH111 (GY/BU) Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
- Yes: GO to 14.
- No : REPAIR the circuits.
- Measure:
- CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- CHECK THE REFERENCE VOLTAGE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- CHECK THE REFERENCE VOLTAGE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT
- CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR RETURN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- CHECK FOR CORRECT DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect and inspect the defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator connector.
- Repair:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- Reconnect the defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator connector. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
- Reconnect the HVAC module connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
- Clear the DTCs .
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
- Yes: INSTALL a new Defrost/Panel/Floor Mode Door Actuator, REFER to Mode Door Actuator - Defrost-Panel-Floor Door . TEST the system for normal operation. If the concern is still present, GO to 15 .
- No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
- MODULE ACTUATOR POSITION CALIBRATIONNOTE: The purpose of the module actuator position calibration is to allow the HVAC module to reinitialize and calibrate the actuator stop points.
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect and inspect all HVAC module connectors.
- Repair:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- Reconnect the HVAC module connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
- Ignition ON.
- Clear the DTCs .
- Using a scan tool, perform HVAC Module self-test.
- Select any position except OFF.

NOTE: The HVAC module initializes and calibrates the actuators. Calibration of the actuators takes approximately 30 seconds.
Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
- Yes: CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs . If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new HVAC module. REFER to Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) Module .
- No : The system is now operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a foreign object in the HVAC case or temporary binding that restricted actuator door travel. CHECK any actuator external linkage. If condition recurs, INSPECT actuator linkage and door for binding and CHECK HVAC case for foreign objects.
