Removal and Installation

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .

NOTE: Use a steering wheel holding device, such as Hunter® 28-75-1 or equivalent.
Using a suitable holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.

NOTE: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the steering column is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the steering column shaft has rotated, remove and recenter the clockspring. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
Remove and discard the upper steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.
- Disconnect the upper steering column shaft from the steering column.
- To install, tighten the new bolt to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft).
- Remove and discard the upper steering column shaft-to-lower steering column shaft bolt.
- To install, tighten the new bolt to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
- From the passenger compartment, remove the upper steering column shaft.
- Separate the steering gear shield from the steering gear housing.
- Remove and discard the lower steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt.
- To install, tighten the new bolt to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
- Remove the lower steering column shaft.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
