Driver Airbag: Removal

WARNING:
Always carry a live airbag with the deployment door, trim cover or tear seam pointed away from the body. Do not place a live airbag down with the deployment door, trim cover or tear seam facing down. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING:
Never probe the electrical connectors on airbag, Safety Canopy or side air curtain assemblies. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these assemblies, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
WARNING:
Do not paint any airbag trim covers or deployment doors. Paint may cause the airbag to deploy incorrectly. Failure to follow this instruction may increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
NOTE:
The air bag warning indicator illuminates when the correct Restraints Control Module fuse is removed and the ignition is on.
NOTE:
The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
- Depower the SRS. Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING - WITH INTELLIGENT ACCESS (IA) or SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING - WITHOUT INTELLIGENT ACCESS (IA) .

NOTE: Repeat this step for both driver air bag module locking pins.
Using a 3 mm (0.1181 in) Allen wrench or a suitable tool, position it through the access hole on the backside of the steering wheel and against the spring clip. Push in, disengaging the clip from the driver air bag module locking pin. With the spring clip disengaged from the driver air bag module locking pin, gently pull back on that side of the driver air bag module to release it from the steering wheel.
- Disconnect the 2 driver air bag module electrical connectors and remove the driver air bag module.
