PINPOINT TEST F: The Power Liftgate Does Not Power Close (Power Open Ok)

  1. F1 CHECK THE MANUAL OPERATION OF THE LIFTGATE 
    • While manually opening and closing the liftgate, check the liftgate for:
      • liftgate/wedge alignment
      • strut operation (struts should push liftgate open when beyond half open)
      • hinges (should move freely)

      Does the liftgate open and close correctly? 

      Yes  : GO to  F2.

      No  : REPAIR and ALIGN as necessary. Refer to LIFTGATE ALIGNMENT .

  2. F2 CHECK THE LIFTGATE LEFT/RIGHT PINCH STRIP STATUS (LFT_PINCH/RT_PINCH) OPERATION 
    • Using the scan tool, view the LTM PIDs  .
    • Monitor the LTM PIDs  LFT_PINCH and RT_PINCH while activating the left and right pinch strips.

      Do the PIDs states change/agree with the pinch strip status? 

      Yes  : GO to  F10.

      No  : GO to  F3.

  3. F3 CHECK THE PINCH STRIP SIGNAL CIRCUIT 
    • Disconnect: Inoperative Pinch Strip.
    • For an inoperative left pinch strip, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4172-1  VOLTAGE Ground
    • For an inoperative right pinch strip, measure
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4173-1  VOLTAGE Ground

      Is the voltage approximately 5 volts? 

      Yes  : GO to  F7.

      No  : If the voltage measured was greater than 5 volts, GO to  F4.

      If the voltage measured was less than 5 volts, GO to  F5.

  4. F4 CHECK THE PINCH STRIP SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: LTM  C4174B.
    • Ignition ON.
    • For an inoperative left pinch strip, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4172-1  VOLTAGE Ground
    • For an inoperative right pinch strip, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4173-1  VOLTAGE Ground

      Is any voltage present? 

      Yes  : REPAIR the circuit in question.

      No  : GO to  F5.

  5. F5 CHECK THE PINCH STRIP SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: LTM  C4174B.
    • For an inoperative left pinch strip, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4172-1  OHM Ground
    • For an inoperative right pinch strip, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4173-1  OHM Ground

      Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

      Yes  : GO to  F6.

      No  : REPAIR the circuit in question.

  6. F6 CHECK THE PINCH STRIP SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • For an inoperative left pinch strip, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4172-1  OHM C4174B-12 
    • For an inoperative right pinch strip, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4173-1  OHM C4174B-14 

      Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

      Yes  : GO to  F11.

      No  : REPAIR the circuit in question.

  7. F7 CHECK THE PINCH STRIP RETURN CIRCUIT 
    • Ignition ON.
    • For an inoperative left pinch strip, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4172-1  VOLTAGE C4172-2 
    • For an inoperative right pinch strip, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4173-1  VOLTAGE C4173-2 

      Is the voltage approximately 5 volts? 

      Yes  : INSTALL a new pinch strip for the pinch strip in question. Refer to Pinch Strip Switch .

      No  : GO to  F8.

  8. F8 CHECK THE PINCH STRIP RETURN CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: LTM  C4174B.
    • Ignition ON.
    • For an inoperative left pinch strip, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4172-2  VOLTAGE Ground
    • For an inoperative right pinch strip, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4173-2  VOLTAGE Ground

      Is any voltage present? 

      Yes  : REPAIR the circuit.

      No  : GO to  F9.

  9. F9 CHECK THE PINCH STRIP RETURN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • For an inoperative left pinch strip, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4172-2  OHM C4174B-21 
    • For an inoperative right pinch strip, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4173-2  OHM C4174B-21 

      Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

      Yes  : GO to  F11.

      No  : REPAIR the circuit.

  10. F10 CHECK THE DETENT AND FORKBOLT SWITCH PIDs 
    • Using the the scan tool, view LTM PIDs  .
    • Operate the liftgate manually while monitoring the LTM PIDs  :
      • Detent Switch Status (DETENTSW)
      • Forkbolt Switch Status (FORKBLT_S)
      • Forkbolt Secondary Switch (FKSWSEC)
    • Begin with the liftgate in the open position, then slowly close the liftgate into each of the latch positions specified.
      Liftgate Latch Position DETENTSW FORKBLT_S FKSWSEC
      Fully unlatched Inactive Active Active
      Primary Active Inactive Inactive

      Do the switch states agree with the table? 

      Yes  : GO to  F11.

      No  : GO to PINPOINT TEST L .

  11. F11 CHECK FOR CORRECT LTM OPERATION 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect and inspect all LTM  connectors.
    • Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    • Reconnect all the LTM  connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  : CHECK OASIS  for any applicable TSBs  . If a TSB  exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB  instructions. If no TSBs  address this concern, INSTALL a new LTM  . Refer to LIFTGATE/TRUNK MODULE (LTM) .

    No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
