PINPOINT TEST F: The Liftgate Latch Release Is Inoperative

  1. F1 RETRIEVE THE BCM AND LTM DTCs FROM THE SELF-TESTS 
    • Ignition ON.
    • Using a scan tool, perform the BCM  self-test.
    • Using a scan tool, perform the LTM  self-test.

    Are any DTCs present? 

  2. F2 REPEAT THE BCM SELF-TEST 
    • Disconnect: Liftgate Release Switch.
    • Using a scan tool, clear the BCM DTCs  .
    • Using a scan tool, perform the BCM  self-test.

    Is DTC B12E8:11 still present? 

    • Yes  : GO to F3  .
    • No  : INSTALL a new liftgate release switch. Liftgate Release Switch 
  3. F3 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: BCM  C2280C.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4216-2  OHM Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    • Yes  : GO to  F22.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit.
  4. F4 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH INPUT 
    • Using a scan tool, view the BCM PIDs  .
    • Using a scan tool, monitor the BCM  DOOR_SW_LUGG PID  .
    • Press and release the liftgate release switch.

    Does the PID indicate OPEN with the switch pressed and Inactive with the switch released? 

    • Yes  : If not equipped with the police package, GO to  F8.

      If equipped with the police package, GO to  F12.

    • No  : GO to F5  .
  5. F5 BYPASS THE EXTERIOR LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Liftgate Release Switch.
    • Unlock the doors using the door lock control switch.
    • Connect and then remove a fused jumper wire:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4216-2  FUSED JUMPER WIRE C4216-1 

    Does the liftgate release? 

  6. F6 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Connect and then remove a fused jumper wire:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4216-2  FUSED JUMPER WIRE Ground

    Does the liftgate release? 

    • Yes  : REPAIR the liftgate release switch ground circuit.
    • No  : GO to F7  .
  7. F7 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: BCM  C2280C.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4216-2  OHM C2280C-23 

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    • Yes  : GO to  F22.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit.
  8. F8 CHECK FOR BCM LIFTGATE RELEASE OUTPUT 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Liftgate Latch (manual liftgate) or LTM  C4174B (power liftgate).
    • Unlock the doors using the door lock control switch.
    • For a manual liftgate, connect a test light:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C457-1  TEST LAMP Ground
    • For a power liftgate, connect a test light:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4174B-25  TEST LAMP Ground
    • Monitor the test light while pressing and releasing the liftgate release switch on the liftgate.

    Does the test light momentarily illuminate? 

    • Yes  : For a manual liftgate, GO to  F10.

      For a power liftgate, GO to  F11.

    • No  : GO to F9  .
  9. F9 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: BCM  C2280D.
    • For a manual liftgate, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C457-1  OHM C2280D-29 
    • For a power liftgate, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C4174B-25  OHM C2280D-29 

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    • Yes  : GO to  F22.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit.
  10. F10 CHECK THE LIFTGATE LATCH GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C457-2  OHM Ground

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    • Yes  : INSTALL a new liftgate latch. Liftgate Latch - Manual  .
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit.
  11. F11 CHECK FOR CORRECT LTM OPERATION 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect and inspect all LTM  connectors.
    • Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    • Reconnect all LTM  connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present  .

    Is the concern still present? 

    • Yes  : CHECK OASIS  for any applicable TSBs  . If a TSB  exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB  instructions. If no TSBs  address this concern, INSTALL a new LTM. REFER to LIFTGATE/TRUNK MODULE (LTM) .
    • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  12. F12 VERIFY THE LIFTGATE RELEASE FUNCTION WITH THE IGNITION ON 
    • Ignition ON.
    • Unlock the doors using the door lock control switch.
    • Press and release the liftgate release switch.

    Does the liftgate release? 

    • Yes  : GO to  F20.
    • No  : GO to F13  .
  13. F13 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE RELAY (IGNITION ON INOPERATIVE) 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Liftgate Release Relay.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Substitute a known good relay and recheck the liftgate release function.

    Does the liftgate release? 

    • Yes  : REMOVE the known good relay. INSTALL a new liftgate release relay.
    • No  : REMOVE the known good relay. GO to F14  .
  14. F14 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE RELAY IGNITION RUN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      Liftgate Release Relay Cavity Pin 2 VOLTAGE Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    • Yes  : GO to F15  .
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit.
  15. F15 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE RELAY GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      Liftgate Release Relay Cavity Pin 2
      G08040033
      VOLTAGE Liftgate Release Relay Cavity Pin 2
      G08040033

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    • Yes  : GO to F16  .
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit.
  16. F16 CHECK THE BCM LIFTGATE RELEASE OUTPUT TO THE LIFTGATE RELAY 
    • Connect a test light:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      Liftgate Release Relay Cavity Pin 3 TEST LAMP Ground
    • Unlock the doors using the door lock control switch.
    • While monitoring the test light, press the liftgate release switch.

    Does the test light momentarily illuminate? 

    • Yes  : GO to  F18.
    • No  : GO to F17  .
  17. F17 CHECK THE BCM LIFTGATE RELEASE OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: BCM  C2280D.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      Liftgate Release Relay Cavity Pin 3 OHM C2280D-29 

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    • Yes  : GO to  F22.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit.
  18. F18 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE IGNITION ON OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Connect: Liftgate Release Relay.
    • Disconnect: Liftgate Latch.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Unlock the doors using the door lock control switch.
    • Connect a test light:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C457-1  TEST LAMP Ground
    • Monitor the test light while pressing and releasing the liftgate release switch.

    Does the test light momentarily illuminate? 

    • Yes  : GO to F19  .
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit.
  19. F19 CHECK THE LIFTGATE LATCH GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (POLICE) 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead
      C457-2  OHM Ground

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    • Yes  : INSTALL a new liftgate latch. Liftgate Latch - Manual  .
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit.
  20. F20 CHECK THE IGNITION OFF BYPASS IN-LINE CONNECTOR 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Inspect the ignition OFF bypass in-line C410.

    Is the in-line C410 disconnected? 

    • Yes  : The system is operating correctly. Disconnecting the in-line connector prevents the liftgate release function when the ignition is OFF.
    • No  : GO to F21  .
  21. F21 CHECK THE POLICE LIFTGATE RELEASE RELAY (IGNITION OFF INOPERATIVE) 
    • Disconnect: Liftgate Release Relay.
    • Substitute a known good relay and recheck the liftgate release function.

    Does the liftgate release? 

    • Yes  : REMOVE the known good relay. INSTALL a new liftgate release relay.
    • No  : REMOVE the known good relay. REPAIR circuit CPL10 (GN/WH) or circuit CPL84 (GN/BN) for an open.
  22. F22 CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM OPERATION 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect and inspect all BCM  connectors.
    • Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    • Reconnect all BCM  connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    • Yes  : CHECK OASIS  for any applicable TSBs  . If a TSB  exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB  instructions. If no TSBs  address this concern, INSTALL a new BCM  . REFER to BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) -- WITHOUT INTELLIGENT ACCESS (IA) .
    • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
