Pinpoint Tests G: Excessive Steering Wheel Play

NOTE: If a damaged bellows boot(s) was discovered during Inspection and Verification and this pinpoint test DOES NOT lead to the installation of a new EPAS gear or bellows boot(s), then go to PINPOINT TEST K  to address the damaged boot(s) before returning the vehicle to the customer.
  1. G1: CHECK THE STEERING COLUMN SHAFT FASTENERS 

    Inspect the steering column shaft fasteners for looseness.

    Are the fasteners okay? 

    Yes No
    Go to  G2. TIGHTEN the steering column shaft fasteners.
    Refer to Specifications STEERING COLUMN SHAFT .
  2. G2: CHECK THE STEERING COLUMN SHAFT U-JOINTS 

    Inspect the steering column shaft U-joints for looseness.

    Are the steering column shaft U-joints okay? 

    Yes No
    INSPECT the tie rods and ball joints.
    Go to Shimmy or Feedback (Rattle, Chuckle or Knocking Noise) - Roughness is Felt in the Steering Wheel When the Vehicle is Driven Over Rough Surfaces
    INSTALL a new steering column shaft assembly.
    REFER to STEERING COLUMN SHAFT .
