Engine Front Cover: Removal

NOTE: Place clean, lint-free shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine. Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages or the oil pan, may cause engine failure.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. REFER to JACKING AND LIFTING .
  2. Recover the A/C system. REFER to AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) SYSTEM RECOVERY, EVACUATION AND CHARGING .
  3. Release the fuel system pressure. REFER to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
  4. Disconnect the battery ground cable. REFER to BATTERY DISCONNECT .
  5. Remove the RH fender splash shield. REFER to FENDER SPLASH SHIELD .
  6. Remove the 3 twist lock retainers and the underbody air duct.

  7. Drain the cooling system. REFER to COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING .
  8. Remove the crankshaft front seal. Refer to CRANKSHAFT FRONT SEAL .
  9. Remove the 3 bolts and the accessory drive belt tensioner. REFER to ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT TENSIONER - 3.5L TI-VCT, 3.7L TI-VCT .

  10. Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil.
    • Install the oil drain plug and tighten to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft).

  11. Remove the vent hose from the degas bottle and position hose aside.

  12. Disconnect the degas bottle coolant hose from the engine coolant tube.

  13. If equipped, detach the engine block heater harness from the radiator support, the A/C suction tube and the engine wiring harness.
  14. Remove the nut and disconnect the A/C suction hose and position the hose aside.
    • Discard the O-ring seal.

  15. Disconnect the fuel supply tube from the fuel rail supply tube. REFER to QUICK CONNECT COUPLING .
    • Remove the fuel tube-to-engine front cover bolt.

  16. Remove the LH and RH valve covers. Refer to VALVE COVER - LH  and Refer to VALVE COVER - RH .
  17. Remove the generator nut and stud.
    • Loosen the bolt and position the generator aside.

  18. Position a floor jack with a block of wood under the front of the oil pan.

  19. Remove the 4 engine mount nuts and the 3 engine mount bolts and remove the mount.

  20. NOTE: It may be necessary to use the floor jack and lower the engine slightly to gain enough access to remove the bolt.

    Remove the lower M10 engine front cover bolt.

  21. NOTE: It may be necessary to use the floor jack and raise the engine slightly to gain enough access to remove the bolts.

    Remove the 2 M10 engine front cover bolts.

  22. Remove the 22 M8 engine front cover bolts.

  23. Remove the M6 engine front cover bolt.

  24. Using a suitable pry tool, locate the 7 pry pads shown in illustration and pry the engine front cover loose and remove.
