WARNING: Do not breathe dust or use compressed air to blow dust from storage containers or friction components. Remove dust using government-approved techniques. Friction component dust may be a cancer and lung disease hazard. Exposure may also cause irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract, and may cause allergic reactions and/or may lead to other chronic health effects. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
If equipped, remove the 4 nuts and the strut tower cross brace.

Position the floor console finish panel aside.

Remove the 2 upper gearshift lever bolts and the upper gearshift lever.

Using a holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.

Remove the 2 steering column dash boot bearing nuts.

Remove the catalytic converter assembly (H-pipe). Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM .
If equipped, remove the 9 screws and the lower air deflector.

Loosen the 2 crossmember brace nuts.

Remove the 6 crossmember brace bolts and remove the crossmember brace.

NOTE: Index-mark the driveshaft flange and pinion flange, and the driveshaft flange and transmission output shaft flange.

Remove the driveshaft. Refer to DRIVESHAFT .
Remove the starter motor. Refer to STARTING SYSTEM .
Remove the 4 subframe cross brace nus and the subframe cross brace.

NOTE: If transmission disassembly is required, drain the transmission fluid.

Remove the drain plug and drain the transmission fluid.
- Clean the drain plug. Apply threadlock and sealer to the plug threads and install the drain plug.
- Tighten to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft).

Remove the 2 gearshift lever nuts.

Position a transmission jack and support the transmission.
Remove the transmission crossmember. Refer to UNI-BODY, SUBFRAME AND MOUNTING SYSTEM .
NOTE: Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the steering column intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the wheel has rotated, remove and recenter the clockspring. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .

Remove and discard the steering column shaft pinch bolt and disconnect the steering column shaft.

Using two adjustable jackstands, support the subframe.

NOTE: Mark the bolts and the crossmember for assembly reference.

NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.

Remove the 4 rear subframe bolts.

Loosen but do not remove the 4 front subframe nuts.

Using the adjustable jackstands, lower the subframe 26 mm (1.023 in).
Partially lower the transmission.
Remove the wiring harness retaining nut.

Disconnect the wiring harness from the LH side of the transmission and position the wiring harness aside.
- Disconnect the reverse lockout solenoid electrical connector.
- Disconnect the 2 wiring harness clips.
Disconnect the wiring harness from the RH side of the transmission and position the wiring harness aside.
- Disconnect the OSS sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the reverse lamp switch electrical connector.
- Disconnect the 2 wiring harness clips.
NOTE: Do not spill brake fluid on painted or plastic surfaces or damage to the surface may occur. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash the surface with water.

Release the clutch hydraulic tube clip and disconnect the clutch hydraulic tube from the clutch slave cylinder connector.
- Drain the fluid into a container.

Remove the 2 engine spacer plate-to-transmission bolts.

Remove the cooler tube bracket nut.
Remove the cooler tube secondary latch.
Using the Transmission Cooler Line Disconnect Tool, disconnect the transmission cooler tube.
NOTE: Use a Jiffy-tite quick disconnect tool.

Disconnect the cooler tube from the transmission connector.
- Drain the fluid into a container.
WARNING: Always secure transmission, transfer case, and axle assemblies to their service jack. Avoid obstructions while lowering and raising the jack. Improperly secured assemblies or contact with obstructions may cause the assembly to fall off the jack, which could result in serious personal injury.

Remove the 6 transmission-to-engine bolts and the transmission-to-engine stud bolt.
NOTE: Disconnect the wiring harness clip from the top of the transmission before rotating the transmission.

Using the transmission jack, rotate the transmission 45 degrees clockwise. Pull the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the pressure plate, then lower the transmission from the vehicle.
- Disconnect the wiring harness clip from the top of the transmission.

If necessary, remove the gearshift lever assembly.
1. Insert a tool into the lower holes to unlock the clips.
2. Rotate the gearshift lever retainers, then remove the retainers.
3. Remove the gearshift lever bolt.
4. Remove the gearshift lever assembly.

NOTE: Use a Jiffy-tite quick disconnect tool.

If necessary, disconnect the cooler tube from the transmission connector.
- Drain the fluid into a container.
