Section 121 (Automatic Transmission (6R80)): Removal: Transmission

NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms can occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The customer needs to be notified that they can experience slightly different upshifts (either soft or firm) and that this is a temporary condition and will eventually return to normal operating condition.
NOTE: If the transmission is to be removed for an extended period of time, support the engine with a safety stand and a wood block.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. If equipped, remove the 4 nuts and the strut tower cross brace.

    Vehicles equipped with a 3.7L engine 

  3. Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  4. If equipped, remove engine appearance cover.
  5. Detach the wiring harness from the 2 transmission studs.

  6. Remove the top 2 and side 2 transmission-to-engine bolts.

  7. Index-mark the driveshaft to maintain alignment during installation.

  8. Remove and discard the 4 driveshaft flange-to-transmission bolts.

  9. NOTE: The driveshaft flanges fit tightly on the transmission flange pilot. Never hammer on the driveshaft or any of its components to disconnect the driveshaft flange from the transmission flange pilot. Pry only in the area shown below, with a suitable tool, to disconnect the driveshaft flange from the transmission flange pilot.

    Using a suitable tool as shown below, disconnect the driveshaft flange from the transmission flange pilot and position the driveshaft aside.

  10. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  11. NOTE: If the engine appearance cover is not removed, it will be damaged when lowering the transmission.

    Remove engine appearance cover.

  12. Detach the wiring harness from the transmission stud.

  13. Remove the top 2 transmission-to-engine bolts.

  14. Index-mark the driveshaft to maintain alignment during installation.

  15. Remove and discard the 4 driveshaft flange-to-transmission bolts.

  16. NOTE: The driveshaft flanges fit tightly on the transmission flange pilot. Never hammer on the driveshaft or any of its components to disconnect the driveshaft flange from the transmission flange pilot. Pry only in the area shown below, with a suitable tool, to disconnect the driveshaft flange from the transmission flange pilot.

    Using a suitable tool as shown below, disconnect the driveshaft flange from the transmission flange pilot.

  17. Remove and discard the 2 center bearing bolts and spacers, then position the driveshaft aside.

    All vehicles 

  18. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.

    Remove the transmission fluid pan bolts and the transmission fluid pan and allow the transmission fluid to drain.

  19. NOTE: It is not necessary to torque transmission fluid pan bolts at this time.

    Install the transmission fluid pan.

  20. Remove the selector lever cable and bracket.
    1. Remove the selector lever cable end from the transmission manual control lever.
    2. Remove the 2 selector lever cable bracket bolts and position the selector lever cable bracket aside.

  21. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube nut and bracket from the flexplate inspection cover stud bolt.

  22. Remove the bolt, the stud bolt and the flexplate inspection cover.

  23. Remove the rubber torque converter nut access plug.

  24. Remove the 9 bolts and the lower splash shield.

  25. NOTE: Index-mark the end of one torque converter stud and the flexplate for installation.

    Remove and discard the 4 flexplate-to-torque converter nuts.

    Remove the 3 bolts and position the starter motor aside.

    Remove the 4 nuts (2 shown) and the front crossmember brace.

  28. Remove and discard the transmission fluid cooler tube bracket bolt and position aside the transmission fluid cooler tubes.

  29. Remove the nut and position the automatic transmission cooler tube bracket aside.

  30. Remove the 2 stud bolts and position the starter motor aside.

  31. Remove the 3 bolts and lower the underbody shield.

  32. Remove the 2 pin-type retainers and the access cover.

  33. NOTE: Index-mark the end of one torque converter stud and the flexplate for installation.

    Remove and discard the 4 flexplate-to-torque converter nuts.

  34. NOTE: Make sure the transmission jack makes contact on the outer ribs of the transmission fluid pan.

    Position a suitable high-lift transmission jack under the transmission.

  35. Remove the 3 transmission insulator retaining bolts.

  36. Remove the 4 transmission crossmember bolts and remove the crossmember and transmission insulator.

  37. Detach the selector lever cable from the transmission case.

  38. NOTE: Do not pull on the wire harness to disconnect the connector or damage to the connector will occur.

    Disconnect the transmission vehicle harness connector by twisting the outer shell and pulling back on the connector and position the harness aside.

  39. WARNING: Always secure transmission, transfer case, and axle assemblies to their service jack. Avoid obstructions while lowering and raising the jack. Improperly secured assemblies or contact with obstructions may cause the assembly to fall off the jack, which could result in serious personal injury.

    Remove the 6 transmission-to-engine bolts.

  40. Slide the transmission back far enough to install the Torque Converter Retainer.

  41. NOTE: Partially lower the transmission to gain access to wire harness.

    Detach the wiring harness from the top of the transmission and position aside.

  42. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.

  43. Detach the wiring harness pin-type retainer from the transmission case.

  44. WARNING: Always secure transmission, transfer case, and axle assemblies to their service jack. Avoid obstructions while lowering and raising the jack. Improperly secured assemblies or contact with obstructions may cause the assembly to fall off the jack, which could result in serious personal injury.

    Remove the remaining 5 transmission-to-engine bolts.

  45. Slide the transmission back far enough to install the Torque Converter Retainer.

  46. NOTE: Partially lower the transmission to gain access to wire harness.

    Detach the wiring harness from the top of the transmission and position aside.

  47. NOTE: Using the transmission jack, rotate the transmission approximately 25 degrees clockwise.

    Remove the transmission from the vehicle.

    All vehicles 

  48. If the transmission is being disassembled to install new parts, or if a new or remanufactured transmission is being installed, clean and backflush the transmission fluid cooler, the auxiliary transmission fluid cooler (if equipped) and the transmission fluid cooler tubes to keep contaminants from entering the transmission.
